The Most Essential Amendment (Assigned 1/3/11)

Which of the ten amendments in the Bill of Rights do you feel is the most essential for citizens? Why?  Defend your answer with at least two reasons/examples.

92 comments:

  1. I think Amendment 1 is the most essential to citizenship because it is mostly about freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition. All of these help us in our life because we would not be able to say what we wanted without this amendment. I think this Amendment has the most useful rules and has the most rights in it so I think it is very essential. Without the freedom of religion we could all be forced to be Muslim or Jewish, and not what we wanted. In Amendment 1 I think the most important topics are freedom of speech and freedom of religion because we use this rights everyday in our lives.

  2. I believe that the first amendment (freedom of expression) is the most important. The ability to say anything we want, and the ability to criticize the government, are two things that set us apart as a nation. Also, the ability to worship any religion is very important to me.

  3. I think the most essential right for citizens is the right to bear arms. In my opinion it is important because it’s important to protect yourself if you’re in danger. For example people who work at gas stations or drug stores need protection from robbers or thief’s therefore they need to carry a gun in the store. Also if you are traveling you should have the right to carry a gun for protection. Homeowners as well should be able to own a gun because of break-ins and robberies. People also use guns other than violence. They are used to supply families with food and in that case I think it should be legal to carry a gun

  4. I believe that the most essential amendment of the Constitution is the first amendment. The freedom of speech, religion, and press helps us express ourselves. The right to peacefully assemble and petition are asscential to speaking out. The freedom of speech allows for new ideas to be introduced along with assembling. The right to petition and press help people make change and spread ideas. The freedom of religion allows anyone to express their believes. The American Constitution would not be the same without the first amendment.

  5. For me, it was a very easy decision to make for this blog. I say the most important ammendment is the one that states that we have the freedoms of speech, religion, and press. As well as having the rights to peacefully assemble and to petition the government. There are several reasons I chose this as the most important. One is that if it wasn't for the right to peacefully assemble, then African-Americans may not be at their stature today due to Martin Luther King Jr. Also, the freedom of speech lets us fully express ourselves and our opinions to the general public. These rights are not only very imortant to me, but also the rest of the nation.

  6. I think amendment IV is the most essential for citizens because it says that cops and other people need a warrant and a good reason to pull someone over and search them. If this amendment wasn't here cops could pull over people for no reason. However, when someone does something against the law the cops would have to have a good reason and a warrant, instead of just putting them to jail. Another good thing about this amendment that is essential is the overall privacy of people; they can keep that privacy if they haven't done anything against the law.

  7. I think out of the 10 amendments, the most essential amendment for citizens is the first amendment. It is the freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly, and petition to government. We, citizens, talk so freely and mindlessly. If we were not to have the right of speech, then people would get in trouble a lot. We want to speak our mind freely without having to be punished. Also, we would need freedom of press because then you wouldn’t always get the scoop in magazines or newspapers. As well as that, we couldn’t say the things we now say on the computer, in which many people here type freely on Facebook. In addition, we would need freedom of religion because in the United States, many people practice different religion and it would be unfair for us not praise in what we believe in. In addition, we need to peaceful assemble to argue and fight for what we believe is true. Lastly, we demand for what we want to happen or be changed from the government. We need to have a voice in government because we are citizens of the U.S. and we count in this world. So, this is what I think is key to the citizens.

  8. I think that the first amendment of the US constitution is the most important. It states that citizens have freedom of religion, speech, and the press and the right to peacefully assemble and petition. I believe that it is the most significant because without it we would have no way to express our thoughts or anything. We would not be able to say what we want, worship what we desire, and many more abilities that we have today. That pretty much means we wouldn’t be running our own lives, because we would have control over barely anything. Also, without that amendment we would start to become like Britain again. When we were under British rule we didn’t have the right to do any of the things in first amendment. We became our own country because we didn’t want to be ruled like that. Therefore, I think the first amendment of the United States Constitution is the most essential amendment.

  9. I think that the first amendment is the most essential for citizens. Without it we wouldn't be able to speak our mind and practice your own religion. If you couldn't speak your mind people like the government could push you around. Also, you wouldn't be able to practice your own religion without being punished.

  10. I think that the most vital amendment out of all the already important amendments is the First Amendment. This amendment grants us our freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, power to petition government, and the right to assemble peacefully. Without this amendment, the other amendments would make no or little use. After all, freedom and liberty is what our country is based on. It would alone make sense to take our rights first before all else. Think of how restricted and horrible our life would be if we weren't able to speak our minds freely! It would be no difference than living in a prison, maybe even worse. I'm proud that we live in a free country, and we should never take our rights or freedom for granted.

  11. When I think of what started the United States of America, I think of the efforts of the people during the Revolutionary War. All the while they had to break the laws created by Great Britain. These people spoke out against Britain to gain rights, petitioned British goods during the Boston Tea Party, and assembled to efficiently break away from their cruel rule. So, of the Ten Amendments, I strongly feel that the First Amendment is the most important to citizens. This amendment states that citizens gain the freedoms of speech, religion, and of the press and have the right to peacefully assemble and to petition. If we hadn’t gained these rights, we could be, again, stuck in a right-less government with no say in what would happen to us. Now that we have strongly secured this amendment, we have a significant say in what laws are created, who represents certain areas of government, and who leads our nation.

  12. I feel that amendment eight is most essential for citizens. This is my opinion because if cruel and unusual punishment were allowed, then our country would be somewhat barbaric. If someone stole sunglasses from a store, they should not be beheaded. To me, this just doesn't make sense. Another reason amendment eight is the most essential for citizens is because without it, our country could be driven by fear. For example, imagine the highways. I can almost guarantee that if there was no amendment eight, everyone would go at least ten miles per hour under the speed limit, in fear of getting killed for going a few miles per hour above the speed limit. These two reasons are why I believe amendment eight is the most essential to our society.

  13. I personally think the first amendment is the most important in the Bill of Rights. I think this because in the past people have said what they wanted t, believed what they wanted to, protested towards what they didn't believe in and posted what they wanted to, even if it was illegal. For people to be punished for what they believe in is cruel. People should be able to express what they want to, without criticism.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think that amendment 1 is the most important amendment. Without freedom speech it would be very difficult to run the government and for the people to have a say in what they want. Also without freedom to petition the government we would be going against the constitution and the people wouldn't be allowed to have any say in their government. And without freedom to assemble peacefully some people would feel their rights being taking away from them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think that the first amendment from the Bill of Rights is very essential for citizens. The first amendment includes "...freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly, freedom to petition the government..." The freedom citizens have in this amendment is very important because people would not get to have freedom for anything. For example, if this amendment wasn't created citizens would not have a say in what they believe in. People would also limited to what they say because you wouldn't have freedom of speech.

  16. I feel that out of the ten amendments in the Bill of Rights, the most essential one for citizens is The first one. Which says: freedom of speech, right to religion, right to peacefully assemble, freedom of the press, and right to protest. I think this is the amendment that is most essential to citizens because it is saying that we have to right to talk whenever we want, the right to express our own religion and believe in what we want and feel of, right to hold events and talk at assemblies, right to publish or print anything that we need to without having to tell the government so they can approve it, and right to defend or protest if we don’t believe in something or think its a bad idea. With this amendment we get to express our feelings and do what we want to do without it having to get proven or seen by the government.

  17. I think that the most important amendment in the Bill of Rights is the first amendment. I think that the first amendment is the most important because it gives people the right to freedom of speech, religion, press, the right to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition the government. Citizens of the United States of America live in a free country where they are able to speak their minds and practice their own religion. Without the first amendment, we would not be a free country. Also, the government could get too powerful and overrule the people. The first amendment is the most important and allows us the freedom we have.

  18. In my opinion the most essential amendment in the constitution is number 8, Prohibition of excessive bail and cruel and unusual punishment. I think this because cruel and unusual punishment is uncalled for, also no one can be tortured as they used to. If everyone followed this amendment there would be no need for the sixth and seventh amendments.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I personally think that the most essential amendment in the Bill of Rights is the first amendment. The first amendment states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances". I think this amendment is the most important because religion is a big deal for some people. Having the right to assemble and protest has made a lot of situations better. If we did not have the freedom of speech, we wouldn't be able to speak our opinions and people would be holding in things that need to be let out. Some people turn to god when things are going wrong, and if you weren't allowed to be the religion you truly believe in you would feel like you don't have control over your own thoughts.

  20. I think the first amendment in the Bill of Rights is the most essential for citizens. It protects freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to peacefully assemble. I think this is the most important amendment because without it, people wouldn't be able to say what they want to say, when they want to say it. People would also have to practice a certain religion even if they didn't want to. Lastly, if a group of people wanted to have an assembly to discuss something, they wouldn't be able to without the right to peacefully assemble. Even though all of the other amendments are important, too, I think that this is the most essential for citizens, and the most enforced, too.

  21. The two amendments that i believe are the most essential for citizens in the U.S are first, freedom of speech, religion, press, peacefully assemble and to protest and second, right to have your own privacy. The reason why i believe my first choice is the right choice is basically for one reason. Its good to have freedom and not be bossed around by some one all day long. Imagine everyone in the world practice the same religion because there were no ammendments, or if no one had the guts to speak up because the ammendments were never created. The world would be completely different by now if people in the United States didnt have freedom. I think that the right of having your own privacy is extremley important in people's lives. Pricavy is something that you need whenever you dont want some one to find out about a secret or maybe you're embarrassed to show people some kind of action or feeling. Without privacy, so many people would be extremley self concious about themselves and wont be able to express any of their thoughts, feelings or actions. Everyone would have a hard time growing up in life without privacy because everything would just turn into chaos. If the amendments didnt include this rule, i think there would be a much higher percentage of suicides all around the world, especially teens. Teens need all the privacy they can get because going to school to try to fit in and make people happy is one of the hardest things there is, so you obviosly need your privacy for that one. Amendment 1 and amendment 5 are, in my opinion, the most important amendments out there.

  22. I believe the most essential amendment to citizens is the 1st amendment the freedom of speech, religion, press, the right to peacefully assemble and the right to protest. When you think of rights you think of the contents of the first amendment. If we didn’t have these rights the world would be very different from how it looks today. Without the freedom of speech citizens could not voice their personal opinions or speak out and advocate for others rights. PETA is an example of a company where they fight for those who cannot speak for themselves. Freedom of religion is also very important because it is what drove people to come to the new world and start new societies. The United States was formed in part because of religious persecution.

  23. I think that the most important amendment is amendment one because I think that you should have a freedom of speech, religion and freedom from the press, etc. I think this because you wouldn't be able to speak out for the things that you want but since we have freedom of speech you can say anything you want to anybody or about the government. Without freedom of religion people wouldn't be allowed to practice the religion that they desire and some people might be afraid to even try and practice their religion. If people didn't have freedom from the press then the press would be following them around and they wouldn't have ant privacy from them.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think the most essential amendment for citizens is amendment number 1 because everyone should be free to have a speech to have a religion and all of that. I think amendment 1 is really important to citizens, because when you have an idea of something you can tell others and if you like something and if you are religious so yea I think amendment 1 is the most essential .

    ReplyDelete
  25. The amendment that is most essential for citizens is the first amendment. I believe this because it is the one that guarantees freedom of speech, religion, press, and the right to petition. Most newspaper publishers would not be able to inform the citizens of the United States about what’s happing in their city or around the world without it first being censored by the government.

  26. The most important amendment in the Bill of Rights to me is Amendment I. I think that this is them most important because if we didn't have the freedom of religion, speech, press, right to peaceably assemble and right to petition. Then there will be no news stations, no magazines, no being able to talk to the government about the citizens problems and no protesting against unfair payment. So if we don't have this amendment then we wouldn't have all things that we have today so I think that amendment I is the most important amendment to me.We need the first amendment more than ever because if we don't have the amendment then there would be no freedom to talk about the governments problems or anything else about the government.

  27. I think that the first amendment is the most essential amendment to the people. The first amendment says congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohbiting the free exercise therof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peacefully assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. I think this amendment was most important because it made life for U.S. citizens alot more free. After this amendment was passed made citizens of the U.S. alot more relieved.

  28. I think that that the first Bill of Right is the most important because we should have the right to say what we would like to say and say what our opinion is and, also we should have the right of what we would like to believe in and say who we believe in! An example would be that like when we go to a meeting at work and we are all agreeing on something it should not be the boss and only the boss, they should have a vote and see which topic is most popular or which one gets higher votes!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think out of all the ten amendments id choose amendment 1 whitch is freedom of religion, freedom of the press, freedom of speech. Why i think its important becuase i think everyone is different with religion people are christian or jewish and if we didnt have freedom of religion we would only have one religion and it would not be fair to the citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think the most important amendment of the Bill of Rights is the first. The freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the right to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition are all extremely needed to have a free country. Without these rights and freedoms, we could not express our self. Without the freedom of speech, religion, and press; citizens could not say or do what they felt like. This amendment recognizes our natural rights as humans. It should definitely be the first amendment.

    ReplyDelete
  31. There are several important amendments, though some are more imperative than others. I believe the most important amendments from the Bill of Rights are amendments one and four. First and foremost, is freedom of religion, press, speech, peacefully assemble, right to petition government. Freedom of religion, because we have many people of multiple different ethnicities living in the United States, and we can’t force them all to practice the same religion, there would be uproar. Also the freedom of the press, since that’s the way the public receives their information on what’s going on in the world around them. For example, if the president was shot, the people would want to know. The fourth amendment, no unreasonable search and seizure, is critical for privacy. The people have a right to their privacy, and the police (or anyone else) can’t simply barge into their home. If you want to go into someone’s home, you must have a warrant or their permission too, if not, you cannot enter. I believe these are the most important amendments, for the reasons I have listed above. If I had to chose from the ten amendments-in reality- these would be the ones I would have chosen.

  32. I feel that the first amendment is the most essential to the forming of our country. It allows U.S citizens to be individuals and voice their opinions freely without fear of punishment. The first amendment sets us apart from other nations. Our country was formed on the idea of freedom, and I believe that this amendment finally gave the citizens just what they wanted and needed.

  33. I believe that the most important amendment in the bill of rights is amendment 1 because it is important to be able to state your opinion by freedom of speech, religion, media, right to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition. I believe that it is important to be able to speak what you believe so that the government does not try to take over. Without these rights we would not have more than half the things that we have today. This amendment allows us to do many different things that we do in are daily lives.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think that amendment one is the most essential for citizens of the Bill of Rights. I feel this way because without this amendment the people would no have to say their voice. If this happened then the government could make unfair choices for citizens, and people could be treated wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In my opinion, out of all of the 10 amendments in the Bill of Rights only some I feel are the most essential for citizens. I think that the most important amendment is the first amendment: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition. I believe the first amendment is the most important because without those freedoms we would have no say in almost everything we do. The next important amendment is the second, right to bear arms. I think this is important because without being able to keep weapons used for protection in our possession it would be hard to protect our self and possibly our families. It is a coincidence that in my opinion the most essential amendments happen to be the first two, but I truly believe those are the most important out of the ten in the Bill of Rights.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I believe that the first ammendment is the most essential to us as Americans. Having the right to speak your opinion freely is a big privilage because many countries don't have that. Also having the right to pick your religion is big, especially in the 1700's when religion was an even bigger part of society than today.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think that the cruel punishment amendment is the most essential amendment for citizens for a couple reasons. First of all, someone could lose their life from cruel punishment. So, it is serious and important to have this amendment. Also, I think that this amendment is the most important because if it wasn’t there, there could be chaos. As a result, I think that this amendment is the most essential for citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think that the first amendment is the most essential for citizens. I believe this because we use our freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition of the government in our everyday lives. Without this amendment, this country would be a complete mess because no one would have a freedom of speech or press, which would mean we can't say what we want and can't publish the stuff we want. Freedom of religion is needed because if we were all the same religion, what would make us different than other countries? Freedom of assembly and petition of the government mostly involve things to do with the Presidential wire. Without those, our country wouldn't be as great as it is today in my opinion

    ReplyDelete
  39. I believe that the first amendment in the constitution is the most essential. The first amendment gives the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition. Without all of these rights and liberties, the United States of America would lose its image of a free country – what we fought so hard for in the Revolutionary War with Great Britain. Suppose we (Americans) are forced to lose every right and liberty with the exception of the first amendment. We could gain all of our rights back with the freedom of speech, freedom of the press, right to peacefully assemble, and especially the right to petition.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I feel that the first amendment of the Bill of Rights is the most important amendment. Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are very important in our world. Many people have died to keep their religion and for their religion. Also freedom of speech is key to our way of life because many people want a say in their live. Since the time of Jesus Christ many people wanted to be religious and have a say in what they want to do. Many people have fought for their rights in order for their children to live better than they did.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I believe that the first amendment in the Bill of Rights is the most essential for citizens because if we did not have freedom of speech, religion, press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition, then we would not be able to voice any of our opinions. First of all, if we did not have freedom of speech, then we could never say what we believed. We would always have to choose our words carefully and never be conspicuous. Similarly, If we did not have freedom of press then we would not be able to voice our opinions in writing. This would impact our nation greatly today because we have countless newspapers, books, magazines, and articles that has their own personality and point of view on various topics. Next, if we did not have the freedom of religion, then we would be forced to have a religion you may or may not want. Right to peacefully assemble, on the other hand, allows us to congregate in a civil manner to discuss topics and news. Lastly, the right to petition lets us speak out against the government if we do not agree with their viewpoints or ideas. I believe that these rights in the first amendment set out the basic foundation to the rest of the constitution, even though each and every one of the amendments are important to our nation.

  42. The most essential amendment for citizens in the Bill of Rights is amendment number one. Amendment number one states that everyone should have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to the press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition. Without this amendment, there would be trouble in the United States. Freedom of speech is important because without the freedom of speech, no one can speak freely of their beliefs on a subject. Also without freedom of religion, people will not be able to have beliefs in different gods, and have their own accustomed religion. Without right to the press, they will not be able to print or publish anything without the consent of higher authority. Next, without the right to peacefully assemble, assemblies would be chaos, and there would be much disagreement and riots. Last, without the right to petition, there would not be any discussion because there isn’t a petition. Without a petition, you wouldn’t be able to hear voices, and opinions would not be heard. Those are the reasons why amendment number one is most important for the citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In my opinion, the ninth amendment of the Bill of Rights is the most important. I think it is the most essential because it covers everything in the Constitution. If this amendment was not present in the Bill of Rights, any right in the Constitution could be taken away or ignored. Although the other amendments are very important, this one protects the others. The ninth amendment, in my opinion, is by far the most important and essential.

  44. "I think one the most essential amendments for citizens is Amendment 8, which is: "No cruel and unusual punishments." I think this, because I believe cruel and unusual punishment is wrong. The reason why is because it wasn't right to cut off someone's head, or burn them, in my opinion. Cruel and unusual punishment could lead to: major injuries, possibly sickness or even DEATH!! And what if that person was inisisant? Still, even if he or she wasn't cruel and unusual punishment would be just wrong."

  45. I think the 1st of ten amendments would defiantly be most essential to the citizens. The 1st amendment is the right of speech, right of press, right to peacefully assemble and right to petition. These are the most basic yet most important rights a free nation could have. They successfully hit many of the key points as to being a free country. If our citizens would not be able to speak their mind or petition against what they believe in we could not call ourselves a free nation. We would just be another over ruled country.

  46. I agree with Austin R. 7-8 when he said, "I think amendment IV is the most essential for citizens because it says that cops and other people need a warrant and a good reason to pull someone over and search them." I agree with this because it would be very insulting if a cop pulled you over just because you look guilty. Also, I agree with Natalie L. when she said, " I think one of the most essential ammendments for citizens is Ammendment 8 which is: 'No cruel and unusual punishment.'" I say this because I don't want to get smacked just because I did something wrong. Now, I think these people make great points.

  47. I agree with Lisa V. who said that the first amendment is the most vital to her. She said, “This amendment grants us our freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, power to petition government, and the right to assemble peacefully.” This is exactly what I thought. I disagree with Austin R. who said, “I think amendment IV is the most essential for citizens because it says that cops and other people need a warrant and a good reason to pull someone over and search them.” I disagree because without the first amendment we wouldn’t have the freedom of speech to speak against them.

  48. After reading over the comments of my peers, I can veraciously say that I firmly agree with Meaghan W. of 7-8. She says, "I feel that the first amendment is the most essential to the forming of our country. It allows U.S citizens to be individuals and voice their opinions freely without fear of punishment. The first amendment sets us apart from other nations. Our country was formed on the idea of freedom, and I believe that this amendment finally gave the citizens just what they wanted and needed." Our freedom and liberty is what makes our nation known as "paradise" in other countries. Without our hard-earned freedom, we would be but "another overruled country" as Y. Alcala of 4-5 stated. She says that the first amendment is really what gives us that identity of a free nation, where people can actually have opinions and willpower. Instead of having to bow down to one set of established opinions made up by some despotic ruler, we have the freedom to choose what to believe in, and what to not believe in. This is what makes America America. We may have differences, but that is just exactly what the United States is. We are a big melting pot where no one is excluded or looked down on because of their beliefs. I think that is what makes America such a beautiful place. As Meaghan W. and Y. Alcala have said well, the First Amendment includes our most basic founding rights that serves as the key points of our country. It is who we are.

  49. Austin R's statement "I think amendment IV is the most essential... because it says that cops and other people need a warrent to search them" is an important one. However, I think that number one is the best way to show expresssion. It is also good for advertising and voicing new ideas on the government. Francis P states "The most essential amendment... is amendment number one". I could not agree with you more. You state all the reasons why it is the proper choice, and how it impacts our government. Another reason you could have added, along with myself, is that why would it be the least important if it was not number one.

  50. I feel that the first amendment, the freedoms of religion, speech, press, right to peacefully assemble, and petition. These are the main rights that everyone should have, because religion is one of the basic blocks of life. Freedom of speech is important so you can let out what you feel is correct, and freedom of the press is how we can read newspapers, and know what is going on in the world. Without the press, we would know nothing about what is going on in other territories. Also the rights to assemble and petition are useful to stand up for something you feel is incorrect.

  51. Francis P. of p.4-5 said that the first amendment was very important because it included many freedoms of americans. I agree strongly with him, because it gave americans what they deserved: freedom. Danielle S. of p.7-8 said Amendment 9 was the most important, but i disagree because it just says anything not listed is still enforced. I believe it is important not most important.

  52. For the most essential amendment, I would have to agree with Kristin A. that Amendment first is the most important amendment. She stated, “All of these help us in our life because we would not be able to say what we wanted without this amendment.” That is very true. I would also have to agree with Hannah D. She declared, “I believe that it is the most significant because without it we would have no way to express our thoughts or anything. We would not be able to say what we want, worship what we desire, and many more abilities that we have today.” That was a very powerful statement. But, I would have to disagree with a few people. I disagree with Ashtyn P.’s belief. She stated, “I think the most essential right for citizens is the right to bear arms. In my opinion it is important because it’s important to protect yourself if you’re in danger.” It’s not that I don’t think what she said is true, but I don’t believe it’s the most important. I would also disagree with Austin R. He said, “I think amendment IV is the most essential for citizens because it says that cops and other people need a warrant and a good reason to pull someone over and search them. If this amendment wasn't here cops could pull over people for no reason.” He does have a point, but its means that you would need a warrant to search your house. But it doesn’t mean that a cop could pull over people for no apparent reason. This amendment is important, but not the most important. In conclusion, I believe the most important first amendment is the most important, and that’s why I think it’s the first amendment.

  53. Lisa 7-8 said, " I think that the most vital amendment out of all the already important amendments is the first amendment." Although I said amendment eight is the most important one, I believe the first amendment is a close second. If we didn't have freedom of speech, then I don't know where our country would be at today. We would probably be doing the same thing our forefathers were doing two hundred years ago. Whether that is a good or bad thing depends on the way you look at it. 7/8 Danielle S. said, " In my opinion, the ninth amendment of the Bill of Rights is the most important."I think Danielle made a good point. The ninth amendment states that rights in the Constitution cannot be denied. We need those rights in the Constitution to ensure safety in our everyday lives. If we did not have this right, then who knows what our rights would really be. Imagine, people would be able to deny our rights. That could erupt our country into chaos.

  54. Lisa said, “I think the most vital amendment is the first amendment…Without this amendment, the other amendments would make no or little use.” I agree with Lisa. Without the first amendment almost all of the other ones would not work because we wouldn’t have the right to do anything. Anna Nicole T. said, “The fourth amendment, no unreasonable search and seizure, is critical for privacy.” Although that is important, I do not think it is the most essential. Danielle S. said, “In my opinion, the ninth amendment of the Bill of Rights is the most important.” I think the ninth amendment (which states that not all rights are in the constitution) is crucial, but I still think that the first amendment is more significant. In conclusion, I still think that the first amendment is the most important, but there are others that come close behind.

  55. I agree with 4-5 Quinn C. In that the first amendment is the most important, and with her statement “The American Constitution would not be the same without the first amendment.”
I also agree with 7-8 Kyla in her statement “…without it, our country could be driven by fear,” although, I don’t believe it’s the most important.

  56. I agree with 4-5 Chandler D. when she says "the freedom citizens have in this amendment is very important because people would not get to have freedom for anything. For example, if this amendment wasn't created citizens would not have a say in what they believe in." I agree with this because without freedom of speech, religion, press, right to peacefully assemble or petition, people would have no say in government or in the country. Even though I agree with 4-5 Anna Nicole T. when she says "no unreasonable search and seizure, is critical for privacy," I believe that it is not the most important amendment. Without freedom of anything, we would be overruled by the government, but without no reasonable search and seizure, our lives would still pretty much run the way they are today. I agree with 4-5 Chandler D. and think that the most important amendment out of the first 10 is amendment 1.

  57. Nate D. 7-8 said “The ability to say anything we want, and the ability to criticize the government, are two things that set us apart as a nation.” I agree with this statement because this relates to Amendment 1, which in my opinion, is the most important Amendment. It sets us apart from other countries because some countries can’t say what they want about their government.
Francis P. 4/5 said “Without this amendment (amendment #1), there would be trouble in the United States. I agree with this because without amendment #1, we wouldn’t be the same country that we are today. We wouldn’t have different religions, we wouldn’t be able to say what we want, and we wouldn’t be about to petition.

  58. I think the first amendment is the most important. I agree with Eric and Kristen and 90% of the class. It just has the most items rolled up in it. Also we use these rights daily. I disagree with Grase because we don't use the eighth amendment every day.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I agree with Kristin A. and Nate D. who both said that amendment one is the most important. Freedom of speech, religion, press, petition and right to peaceable assemble is what amendment one said and it covers most of people’s rights. Kristin A. said, "All of these help us in our life because we would not be able to say what we wanted without this amendment." Which I agree with completely. Nate D. also said, "I believe that the first amendment ... is very important to me."

  60. I agreed with Alia when she said," I think that that the first Bill of Right is the most important because we should have the right to say what we would like to say and say what our opinion is..." and Kyla when she said, "I feel that amendment eight is most essential for citizens. This is my opinion because if cruel and unusual punishment were allowed, then our country would be somewhat barbaric. If someone stole sunglasses from a store, they should not be beheaded. To me, this just doesn't make sense" In response to Kyla's example, as bad as it is to steel, it would be a bit too much to behead the thief. This amendment keeps our government from abusing their power, and hurting, or even killing, those who they do not like or agree with.

  61. I Would have to Choose Lisa V becuase we both picked Amendment 1 what she said about amendment 1 was that "freedom and liberty is what our country is based on. It would alone make sense to take our rights first before all else" What she said was that freedom and liberty is what our country is based on and that the citizens should take our rights fisrt before all else.
I also like what Natalie L said she choose amendment 8 even though i didnt choose that amendment i still think that amendment is important to this country and what she said was "No cruel and unusual punishments."I think this, because I believe cruel and unusual punishment is wrong." I also think punishehment is wrong as well.

  62. I agree with Matt S., (per. 4-5). The reason why is because yes, someone COULD lose their life, from cruel and unusual punishments. It would be cruel, sad, and just plain wrong. And yes, if there wasn’t this amendment, it WOULD be chaos!
I also agree with Christian W., (per.7-8), because I also believe that freedoms of speech, religion, and the press are another important amendment. The reason why is because everyone should have this right. And this amendment WOULD base for people to express their selves, and opinions to the general public.

  63. I agree with Hannah D because we are free people and we shold be able to say what we wont.

  64. In my opinion, ammendment number one is most essential because it is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to the press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition. I agree with Kristin A. of period 4/5. I agree with her because I too believe that ammendment number one is the most essential. She stated "I think this Amendment has the most useful rules and has the most rights in it so I think it is very essential." I agree with that because ammendment one has the most rights in it and it is very essential. I also agree with Jordyn K. of period 4/5 when she stated, "Without these rights we would not have more than half the things that we have today." I agree with that because it is true, without it, we wouldn't have that much things today.

  65. I would have to agree with Kyla and Lisa on this blog response. First of all, when Lisa says, “Without this amendment, the other amendments would make no or little use,” I totally agreed with her 100 %. The first amendment is basically a summary of all of the ten amendments put together in one sentence. I also agree with Lisa when she states in her response, “After all, freedom and liberty is what our country is based on.” I believe that statement is very true. I would also have to agree with Kyla when she says that the most important amendment out of the ten is number 8, no cruel and unusual punishments. If cruel and unusual punishments were allowed, our country would be barbaric. Kyla would also have to agree with me on that one because she stated that in her blog as well. The one person that I would have to disagree with is Ashtyn. She believes that the most vital amendment of all is number 2, right to bear arms. Why would that be the most important amendment if the amendment no cruel and unusual punishment exists, you don’t really need any weapons to protect yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with Quinn because we both believe that the first amendment was the most essential and important. We think this because the freedom of speech, religion, and press help us express ourselves. The right to peacefully assemble and petition is essential to speaking out. The freedom of speech allows for new ideas to be introduced along with assembling. The right to petition and the freedom of the press help people make change and spread ideas. The freedom of religion allows anyone to express their beliefs. Without these we wouldn’t be a diverse nation.
On the other hand I don’t think that the 4th Amendment is the most important unlike Austin R. He believes that the most essential amendment for citizens is that cops and other people need a warrant and a good reason to pull someone over and search them. If someone wasn’t hiding anything then why would it mater it they were searched.

  67. I dissagree with Ashtyn when she says, "I think the most essential right for citizens is the right to bear arms. In my opinion it is important because it’s important to protect yourself if you’re in danger." I don't think that this is the most essential right, although it is necessary. I agree with Delaine when she says, " think that amendment one is the most essential for citizens of the Bill of Rights. I feel this way because without this amendment the people would no have to say their voice. If this happened then the government could make unfair choices for citizens, and people could be treated wrong." She is definetly correct by saying without the first amendment, people would have no voice.

  68. I think the first amendment is the best for our community because we can talk freely, practice our religion freely, assemble peacefully, freedom of the press, and we can petition the government. I disagree with Danielle S. because what if we need another Constitutional right for the community? What if our nation is dessprete for that new right? So that we can live in peace without the worry of destruction or robbery? I would of disagreed wit someone else but mostly everyone chose amendment one. I believe that amendment number one is the best for our community.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I think that amendment #1 would be most essenital to citizens. I say this because in some countries you can't speak up for yourself, so freedom of speech helps us obtain that right. Also menchioned in this amendment is freedom of religion. Nobody should be forced to have certain views or opinons on what they believe.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I dissagree with Ashtyn when she says, "I think the most essential right for citizens is the right to bear arms. In my opinion it is important because it’s important to protect yourself if you’re in danger." ALthough, I think this is an essential right, it is not the most important. I agree with Delaine H. when she says, "I think that amendment one is the most essential for citizens of the Bill of Rights. I feel this way because without this amendment the people would no have to say their voice."

  71. Kyla, from period 7-8 says "I feel that amendment eight is most essential for citizens. This is my opinion because if cruel and unusual punishment were allowed, then our country would be somewhat barbaric." I disagree with her on this. She makes a good point, but I don't think that would be the most essential for citizens. Savannah from period 7-8 chose amendment #1. She says "I think this amendment is the most important because religion is a big deal for some people. Having the right to assemble and protest has made a lot of situations better." and I completely agree with her.

  72. I agree with Danielle S. when she says "the ninth amendment of the Bill of Rights is the most important". I beliee that this amendment pretty much covers every other amendment and make sure the Constitution is followed. I disagree with Natalie L. when she says, "I think one the most essential amendments for citizens is Amendment 8, which is: "No cruel and unusual punishments." I feel that this amendment is not the most important because the other amendments are very much more necessary. For example, if we didn't have amendment one, then citizens would not have the right to be themselves and share their opinions.

  73. Although I was the only one who said amendment nine was the most essential, I can see why Chandler from 4/5 said amendment one. It covers alot of rights, and without freedom of speech and religion, alot of freedom would be taken away from the people. Also, without the right to peacefully assemble and the right to petition, no one could speek their mind against issues. Like Chandler said, "... if this amendment wasn't created citizens would not have a say in what they believe in." I disagree with Ashtyn from 7/8 that the most important amendment is amendment 2, right to bear arms. She says, "in my opinion it is important because it’s important to protect yourself if you’re in danger." Although this is true, if this amendment was eliminated from the Bill of Rights it wouldn't be a huge deal because there are still other ways to portect yourself and others.

I totally agree with Stefano on this statement.
I also liked how Max L said "Freedom of Religion is needed because if we were all the same religion, what would make us different than other countries." I agree with max a lot because what would be the point in people coming over to America to get there Freedom in Religion.

  75. As I stated before in my last post, I mostly favor amendment one and four, freedom of speech, the press, religion, assembly, and petition the government, along with the right of privacy, of course. Though, others have varying opinions, some close to mine, some completely different. Although, I have to disagree with Hannah F. when she wrote, and I quote,” The next important amendment is the second, right to bear arms.” While this is important, and we do need to defend ourselves, but the thought of random citizens running around with guns, just frightens me. Humans and guns don’t really, “work out.” Since, in all truth, people and guns don’t really fit together, and the result is quite predictable. I do, however, agree with Stefano, who wrote,” I believe that the first amendment in the constitution is the most essential.” This is true, since these freedoms are some of the most crucial to our society today.

  76. I agree with 4-5 Quinn C’s opinion on how he says that “freedom of speech allows for new ideas to be introduced along with assembling.” Allowing new ideas to be introduced helps our nation progress. Our country wouldn’t be where we are today without freedom of speech and assembling. Next, I agree with 7-8 Bradley F’s opinion on how “if you couldn’t speak your mind people like the government could push you around.” If the government pushed us around we most likely have chaos.

  77. I disagree with Ashtyn because I don't think right to bear arms is the most important. I say this because people can protect themselves in other ways. The first Amendment to me is more important because people should have the right to believe what they want and not get punished for it. I agree with Natalie because cruel and usual punishment is wrong, but if people would've had the 1st amendment sooner their wouldn't have been as many cruel and unusual punishments.

  78. I somewhat disagree with Meghan because she states the first amendment is the most important. In her blog she states, “For people to be punished for what they believe in is cruel.” This means it is vital to make amendment eight the most important. I also agree that the first amendment is important though. On another note, I agree with Kyla because she agrees number eight is the most important. Kyla states, “…our country would be somewhat barbaric.” This is very true. Overall all of the amendments are important.

  79. II agree with Yesenia from per. 4-5 when she says, “If our citizens would not be able to speak their mind or petition against what they believe in we could not call ourselves a free nation,” because I also agree that if we didn’t have the opportunity to speak our mind when we want to protest against what we think isn’t right or believe in then we wouldn’t really be a free nation. I also agree with Hanna F from per. 4-5 when she says,” I believe the first amendment is the most important because without those freedoms we would have no say in almost everything we do,” because I agree with her when she says that without the permission the first amendment gives us we wouldn't have a say in anything we do. We would have to have it approved by the government or have someone tell us to say anything in order to say it.

  80. When it comes to what amendment is most essential, i agree with Morgan. H, when she stated, " Without these rights and freedoms, we could not express our self. Without the freedom of speech, religion, and press; citizens could not say or do what they felt like. This amendment recognizes our natural rights as humans." Which states that she thinks the first amendment is the most important. The first amendment is the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and the right to peacefully assemble. Although i think that is the most important, i do understand why Kyla said, " if cruel and unusual punishment were allowed, then our country would be somewhat barbaric" because if we took that amendment away, who knows what people would do to each other. We don't know what would happen, because its been an amendment for quite some time.

  81. I agree with Delaine 7-8 when she said "...amendment one is the most essential...without this amendment the people would no have to say their voice." I agree with this because without the first amendment we wouldn't have a say in anything. I disagreed with Danielle 7-8 when she said "...the ninth amendment of the Bill of Rights is the most important...if this amendment was not present...any right in the Constitution could be taken away or ignored." I disagreed because I think the ninth is very important but it doesn't cover as much as the first, and the first amendment gives more freedom than just having protected rights.

  84. As I read through the comments, I found many that I agreed with, one being Anna Nicole T. from period 4-5. Her blog caught my eye because, one, we wrote about the same amendment (Amendment 1), and two, she supported hers with very good reasons and what it might be like today if we didn’t have this amendment. One reason she stated in support of freedom of religion was, “…we have many people of multiple different ethnicities living in the United States, and we can’t force them all to practice the same religion, there would be uproar,” which I strongly agree with. On the other hand, I disagree with some comments, in my opinion. “I think amendment IV is the most essential for citizens because it says that cops and other people need a warrant and a good reason to pull someone over and search them,” quoted from Austin R.’s blog, is one, for example, that I am not fully sure is most important for citizens. I feel that the common person can continue to live just as they always do without a worry that a police officer or any other authority will want to search them. Overall, there are multiple amendments that I feel to be most important to the common U.S. citizen, while other’s don’t affect our society as much as others.

  85. I agree with Alia per 7-8 that the first amendment is the most important. Alia says " we should have the right to say what we would like to say and say what our opinion is and, also we should have the right of what we would like to believe in and say who we believe in." I agree with that statement. Also Eric t. 4-5 said "Most newspaper publishers would not be able to inform the citizens of the United States about what’s happing in their city or around the world without it first being censored by the government." I agree with Eric and Alia and the majority of the class that the first amendment is the most important.

  86. I agree with Francis P. 4-5 opinions on which amendment is the most important. He said, "Amendment number one states that everyone should have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to the press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition. Without this amendment, there would be trouble in the United States." I like this statement because I completely agree. I disagree with Ashtyn P 7-8 because she thinks that the right to bare arms is the most important. She said, "it is important because it’s important to protect yourself if you’re in danger." In my opinion being able to bare arms is important, but other amendments are more important. If you don't have the right of freedom of speech then how are you supposed to say anything to fix how your government or job treats you. The first amendment in my opinion is the most important.

  87. I agree with Max L. (4-5) as he says,"I think that the first amendment is the most essential for citizens. I believe this because we use our freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition of the government in our everyday lives."This is a reason I agree with because the first amendment is most essential to everyday life.I also agreed with Nate D (7-8)as he says,"The ability to say anything we want, and the ability to criticize the government, are two things that set us apart as a nation." I agree because the first amendment makes the U.S. a more peaceful place than the other countries that don't have these rights.

This strongly protects the rights of our citizens and if this were not in affect our nation would be a very corrupt place.

I could not agree more with Raphael U. when he says that the first amendment of the Constitution is the most important. I believe he is correct in this statement, but I beg to differ in his explanation why. Ralphie said, “…freedom of speech is key to our way of life because many people want a say in their [life]. Since the time of Jesus Christ many people wanted to be religious and have a say in what they want to do. Many people have fought for their rights in order for their children to live better than they did.” This is true, but that is not all this amendment has to offer. Without this amendment, we as Americans would loose one of our greatest titles. That we are a free country and that America is the land of opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  90. I agree with Taylor K about how the first amendment is the most crucial to our country. She stated, "Citizens of the United States of America live in a free country where they are able to speak their minds and practice their own religion. Without the first amendment, we would not be a free country." I believe that if we did not have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, right to peacefully assemble, and right to petition the government we would never be allowed to speak our mind.

I strongly disagree with Ximena that privacy is the most important amendment. She stated, "Without privacy, so many people would be extremley self concious about themselves and wont be able to express any of their thoughts, feelings or actions." While I do agree that people would be embaressed or self concious, I do not believe this amendment is one of the most important. It would at the most beinconvenient, not life-threatening or hazardous.

She said, “I believe that it is important to be able to speak what you believe in so that the government does not try to take over.”

  92. Although the right to bear arms and no cruel and unusual punishment are both very important amendments mentioned by Ashtyn and kyla, I think the most important amendment would be amendment number one. If we did not have this amendment in the constitution we would not be able to voice are opinions, or change anything that we think is wrong. Many historical figures changed the way we lived by showing the way they feel. The right to bear armes is important but I do not do not agree with the statement from Ashtyn “ for example people who work at gas stations or drug stores need protection from robbers or thief’s therefore they need to carry a gun in the store”. I do agree with what kyla said “ Another reason amendment eight is the most essential for citizens is because without it are country could be driven by fear”, but still I think out of all of the amendments amendment number one is the best.
