1. Do you agree or disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship? Why?
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think the U.S should allow birthright citizenship because if they don't allow it, there will be twice as much illegal immigrants and twice as much complaints. Also I agree with Audrey Singer of the Brookings Institution, when she says, "What's different this time is that people in Congress are talking about it. I agree with this because this has been happening for a while and people are just starting to bring it up.
2. What challenges would come with trying to alter or overturn birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th Amendment?
If the U.S tries to alter birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th amendment then there will most likely be people against this because we have been following all 27 amendments for a long time and I don't think we should stop now.
I believe that the 14th amendment should not be allowed. The amendment is possible causing illegal immigrants to travel to the US and have an American baby. The US is trying to keep the immigrants out but if they have children here, then the police can’t do that. I think that the immigration law is should be past in order for US to not become over populated. However, I do see the reasoning in not passing the law for damaging Latino relations. We also need to keep people from coming in over the border and looking for jobs which is increasing our unemployment rate. For America to prosper, we need to act fast on the 14th amendment and illegal immigration.
ReplyDeleteThe Birthright Citizenship is a very serious issue, and I completely disagree with the law.
ReplyDeleteAs the article said, "Opponents of birthright citizenship say it encourages continued illegal immigration. They contend that illegal immigrants are not under U.S. jurisdiction, as the Amendment specifies, and therefore their American-born children should not automatically be citizens."
That statement is correct. Illegal immigrants that come to America from foreign countries such as Mexico and Canada are not citizens. They have not filed any paperwork or anything to the United States, breaking a law. There is no reason why their kids should be citizens, because they came to America illegally.
There is a good reason to overturn the law, but it really is not that simple. Some other countries like Mexico and Brazil have birthright citizenship, but it doesn't work that simply. We should adopt China's law, which says that one parent needs to be a legal citizen for the baby to become a citizen.
I agree and disagree at the same time about birthright citizenship because I think that if the parents of the child are citizens then the child should be too. But if the parents are illegal immigrants then the child should not be a citizen. Like the article said, there will be more and more illegal immigrants coming over if we keep the birthright citizenship allowed. If we change it to that if the parents are citizens the child will be too they will not come over. The challenges that would come from trying to change the birthright citizenship that is stated in the 14th Amendment is that some people might complain and they want it to be fair and they might say that we should keep the rules the same. Some people might say that they put that as the 14th Amendment for a reason and we shouldn’t change it. Althought I think we should change it, many would disagree.
ReplyDelete1) I agree that the US should allow birthright citizenship, because we've had this law since the Civil War, and it has not been questioned since. If we get rid of this law, then about 4 million children will become illegal immigrants according to the article, which also says that this law has never been questioned in Congress before, which really concerns me. America is known as a country of many cultures. If we change this law, that will drastically change our population. I don't know about you, but I would rather not lose all of these people who provide jobs and money for this country.
ReplyDelete2)Since this law has never been altered or questioned in Congress since the civil war, this could cause an outrage in some Hispanic communities. Plus, over 4 million children according to the article have at least 1 illegal immigrant as a parent. If all of these children left, well, I don't think the people would agree with that. Not to mention, how is the majority of Congress going to agree to this. These challenges make me doubt that this will pass to the president.
1. When our for fathers created the 14th amendment, they could not anticipate what was to come. They created the amendment in consideration of people who were forced to come here against their will, former slave’s children. Illegal aliens who purposefully come here to become a citizen without going through legal channels should not be rewarded. It is unfair to those who must apply and earn their citizenship. If a child is born here and becomes a citizen, it cannot live without its parents, so its parents stay here too. I am not saying that this is always the case. It is just important that we do not let this happen.
ReplyDelete2. If we overturn this amendment, many people would be affected. Some people may have protests, others may respond in a different way. Also, what would become of the people who were already declared citizens? Would they remain so, or would their situation be changed, meaning would they be “kicked out” of the United States?
I don’t agree with birthright citizenship because people that come here legally have to wait and do all kind of things to become a citizen, but other people are just coming over illegally and have kids making the child, and eventually them, citizens. Like Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA said “if you are an illegal immigrant, we clearly have not given you permission to reside here.” Many challenges would come up with trying to overturn or alter birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th amendment. Some would be that two thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives must approve of the act. I think it would also make many Americans unhappy.
ReplyDeleteI find this article very interesting. I feel half of me is on one side and the other half of me is on the other side. One half of me feels that if illegal immigrants want to come to our country, their children should not automatically become U.S. citizens. If the parents are illegal, then shouldn't the children be illegal also? If people want to become part of our country, they should be respectful and go through the process to be an American citizen. I think it shows disrespect sneaking into our country. Our forefathers worked and fought hard to make our country free. Although I understand why illegal immigrants want to come to this country, they should take the time to do it legally. Therefore there wouldn't be an issue about whether or not their children make them an American citizen. The other half of me feels confused. America is a big melting pot. People from all over the world live here. Sometimes I don't see why this is such a big deal about becoming U.S. citizens or not. How much harm can an illegal immigrant really do? Not all of them come here for bad reasons. Maybe the country they live in right now has a safety issue, and they don't feel comfortable raising a family there. You don't know what is happening on the other side. America sometimes needs to put our spoiled beings into less fortunate shoes.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that the U.S should allow birthright citizenship. In my opinion, everybody should have to become a citizen, and not be allowed to automatically be a citizen of the U.S because of birthright citizenship. I agree with,"...illegal immigrants are not under U.S. jurisdiction, as the Amendment specifies, and therefore their American-born children should not automatically be citizens." Some challenges that would come with trying to overturn birthright citizenship is that they would have to alter the Constitution, which probably will never happen. Also, by changing the law to not allow birthright citizenship would increase the amount of illegal immigrants in the U.S. As Michelle Waslin stated, that even if we put an end to birthright citizenship, it will not do anything to help the immigration problem that we already have.
ReplyDeleteI think that they should allow birthright citizenship. It's just easier (if only slightly) however they should alter the 14th amendment by saying that (at least) one parent has to be here legally or if they don't know who the parent is for birthright citizen for I disagree that it will not be a deterrent, however I think that it would be wrong to have a child with only one parent. The major reason that they come over other nations is that they want to become American citizens because of the benefits of citizenship which include: free (please still pay) medical assistance, an education, and other benefits
ReplyDeleteNow why is illegal immigration a bad thing you may ask. It wouldn't be if they paid taxes and don’t however the majority don't which means that it may become to expensive and the government would likely get rid of the benefits. Besides they do many jobs for less than an average American aristocrat; then they export their excess capital to their families in their home countries. Those are my reasons for changing instead of abolishing the requirements for birthright citizenship.
However it will probably be hard to actually convince any politician in congress of my idea to reform the 14th amendment than they have to persuade both the & Judicial branches rest of the Legislative of government. it may not seem like a major thing to do but that's a little over 2/3 of Washington's (nonvoter) politicians.
I don't think that the United States should allow birthright citizen ship because mothers are just coming to the U.S. and giving birth leaving their children. The article even brings out, "We can't just have people swimming across the river having children here—that's chaos." Being born without any parental help, guidance, or nurture in a new world by themselves at such a young age is worse than being born in a bad place. The article says,"Altering the Constitution—which requires approval by two thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives and then ratification by 38 state legislatures." This is a feat that is beyond most politicians reach.
ReplyDelete1. Do you agree or disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship? Why? Be sure to refer to specific points from the article to support your opinion.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the U.S should continue with birthright citizenship. The United States began as a country of immigrants and should continue to welcome all people. The United States stands for freedom and power everyone is coming to the U.S for a better life. I do not think we should change the constitution because of problems of immigration.
2. What challenges would come with trying to alter or overturn birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th Amendment?
First they need two of thirds of vote at the house were also damaging the relations of Latino communities. Everyone has a right to live in the U.S. Children around the world doesn’t have Great education and I think that their parents want the best of them to let them go to a great school and make a new discovery in the world.
I don't agree with the birthright citzen because the people that come here leagally have to do a lot of things before they can become a citzen of the United States. If illeagl immigrants come over to america and have their babies over here then, they will soon become citzens because, the united states has the birthright ammendment. Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA said “If you are an illegal immigrant, we clearly have not given you permission to reside here." That would make many challenges for the USA. Many people would not like it one bit if they gave birth and they were citzens but their babies weren't that would make many complications in the US. Just like the 14th ammendment. This would make many Americans were angry.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I believe that the U.S. should continue to grant birthright citizenships. Personally, I cannot blame the immigrants for entering the United States illegally. Many people from different countries view the USA as a land of opportunity and a chance to lead a better life. Most illegal immigrants only wish for a better life. So many Americans take for granted that they were born Americans; born to the privileges and rights of being a free American. They cannot fully grasp the poverty and hardship that many people in third world countries must live with. People from other countries such as Mexico are not as fortunate as us. Some of them, being too poor, were never given the chance to be educated and lead a bright, happy life. After reading books such as The Crossing and Lupita Manana, I understand the courageous desires of many illegal immigrants in the hopes of just simply leading a decent life in America, where there is liberty and justice for all. Many mothers who are illegally giving birth in the US. only wish for their kids to be given the chance of leading a promising future, because they know that with the given conditions in countries like Mexico, it is almost impossible for children of inferior families to be educated well enough to achieve that successful life every mother wants for her kids. More often than not, illegal immigrants don't mean harm to the United States. All they hope of is for their family to be given the equal opportunity of living a good life in a country that they admire and see as a place where promising lives lurk. If they give birth to a baby in America, as an anchor baby, then they know that even if the chances are small, there is still a chance for them and their family to live happily ever after in "paradise" because their child was born there. If we take away birthright citizenships from them, then that means we are also taking from them their only hopes and the only chance they will ever get for leading a better life. If people here are all given the opportunity for leading a well-educated life, then I don't see why we should be selfish enough as to not even give people from other poorer countries a chance to become as blessed as we are. People in search for a better life, like the colonists from long ago that formed the great nation of the United States today, should at least be given a chance.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, if we were to overturn the birthright citizenships as stated in the 14th Amendment, just think about the possible consequences that would in turn result from it. Will the government kick children born to parents who were illegal immigrants out of the United States? When we take that opportunity of becoming citizens of the United States away from immigrants, how will they respond? Will they think of other ways to become a citizen? If they do, how can we ensure that their backup plans are not dangerous and harmful to the US.? There surely will be many, many problems that will arise from the altering of this Amendment. The government needs to think twice about changing this law. Like the article says, this is not about rules and policies, this is about politics and the emotions of people. Many emotional issues will arise from this debate. Many people born from parents who were illegal immigrants will protest. The thoughts and opinions of people will all depend on their bias and background. If they were once an illegal immigrant, or knows an illegal immigrant in search of a better life, they will most likely be against the changing of the law. All in all, I think the emotions and empathy for people should seriously be taken into consideration. Our main concern here is understanding the hardship of those illegal immigrants, not what the law states.
I personally think that the birthright thing is wrong, I think its wrong because its not fair for all the babies that were born here in America. Making it illegal would be a total mistake because even though we might have more citizens here it doesnt really mean anything to us.They are just people why a make a big deal out of it? Although with all of the birth right stuff I think it would be hard for these people, I think they would have a long debate about it, because there are good arguements to both sides to this.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the US should not allow a person to be granted citizenship just because he or she was born within the territorial boundaries of the US. My reasons are really simple, anchor babies. It happens al the time. An illegal alien sneaks over the border to have her kid. Now, because the newborn citizen has no one to take care of it if the parents are deported, the parents get to stay. I believe the fourteenth amendment should be changed to only a child born of an American citizen should be a citizen, or a child born of a legal resident alien should be a citizen. The amendment’s original intent has been met, and it is now outdated and detrimental. There would be a huge uprising if the fourteenth amendment were to be changed. All the ignorant, pro socialism citizens would raise a huge stink. Also, there would be thousands of undocumented people living in the US, but you could fix that by imposing a deadline everybody born after 4/1/11 whose parents aren’t valid citizens will not be made citizens.
ReplyDelete1) The 14th Amendment is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with. I think that the 14th Amendment should be dropped because it would only increase the outcome of illegal immigrants trying to get into the United States to have their baby. People from other countries will come into the United States just to have their babies and increase the percentage of illegal immigrants. If the 14th Amendment isn’t dropped, I think that the illegal immigrants will set off a large chain of illegal immigrants giving their children U.S citizenship.
ReplyDelete2) Even though the 14th Amendment is a huge issue, there will be some challenges that might interfere with the other issues. I think that some of the challenges about trying to overturn birthright citizenship is that it might take longer than expected. If it takes longer than it was expected to, then it will interfere with time that is needed for bigger problems, such as the nuclear threats from other countries and the oil spill in B.P. Overall, I think that the government should overturn the 14th Amendment for the safety of our country.
I believe that they should get rid of the birthright citizenship law. I believe this because illegal immigrants are taking advantage of this opportunity. For example if the illegal immigrant has a kid born in the United States means that the immigrant is allowed to stay and nobody can force him to go back to his country. I believe that to be a United States citizen everybody in the family should be born in the United States. The challenges that come with trying to overturn this law is that it would be necessary for two thirds of the law makers to overturn this law. This would also create a feud between Mexico and all the other countries who are illegally entering our countrie.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should have birthrights because then if we didn’t then a lot of immigrants will come over and just have children and they will technically be U.S. citizen also because we would be increasing the population of illegal immigrants.
ReplyDeleteThe problem we would have with the overturn of birthright is that in the 14th amendment it says “Any one born in the U.S. is a U.S. citizen so if an illegal immigrant gave birth to there child in the U.S. their child would technically be a U.S. citizen.
I think that the U.S. should continue with birthright citizenship. The reason I think this because I believe that the U.S. should welcome all people, Mexicans, Europeans, Cubans, Swedish, etc.
ReplyDeleteI think the challenges that will come will be that everyone there should vote on this because I think that this is a serious issue.
1. I agree because people come to America for freedom and better opportunities. If they were illegal they would still come and me illegal immigrants and that would be an even bigger problem.
ReplyDelete2. Many people would have to leave their homes and lives that they have made in the United States. Also because the educational programs are better here and everybody has a right to learn.
I believe that the U.S should allow birthright citizenship because if your born in the U.S., it’s ridiculous to make a mother and father with their newborn child and make them go to a different country to register a child. I believe that if you are born in the United States you should automatically become a united states citizen. I agreed with Alfonso Aguilar when he says "But you are damaging relations with the Latino community." The Mexicans will start to hold grudges against the people who send them back to where they come from. If will be even harder for those who have been in America for many years and are then sent back to Mexico because of their children.
ReplyDeleteWith changing the laws of birthright citizenship in the 14th amendment, the challenges that come with that are that many people that are here illegally will start to struggle with their children. They will begin to debate over if they should leave their good, well-formed life in the United States, for the life they had before in which they struggled in. I believe that the 14th amendment should stay the same.
1. Do you agree or disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship? Why? I agree that U.S. should allow birthright citizen ship. I agree because if they don't allow birthright citizenship,America would have lots of illegal immigrants walking on the streets of America.I also agree with the article saying "Technically speaking, changing the law to disallow citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants would actually increase the size of the illegal population, since babies born to anyone here illegally would be illegal from the moment of their birth."2. What challenges would come with trying to alter or overturn birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th Amendment? Challenges that might come trying to overturn the birthright citizenship would be strikes. Then they would need to require approval by two thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives and then ratification by 38 state legislatures.
ReplyDeleteThe United States has always been a free country and it should always continue to be. I agree that the U.S should continue it's law of birthright citizenship. We should not change the U.S just because of a minor immigration problem. The U.S is a free country and people did not just come to the U.S because they wanted to become a rule breaker of illegal immigration. They came for peace and freedom and that's what the U.S is about...Peace.
ReplyDeleteThere could be many challanges that could occur trying to alter the 14th amendment. I do not believe that the 14th amendment should even be challanged in the first place. I do agree that people have a right to have their own oppinion about things, but a smart choice would be to just not challange the 14th amendment. We as U.S citizens want the U.S to change in a possitive way, not a negative way.
I agree with the 14th amendment because I believe that if you were born in America you have the right to be a citizen there. I agree with Rosemary Jenks whens she says, "You are still subject to the jurisdiction of your own country." because she is basically saying that your are still part of the country you were born in and you should just stay apart of that. If this amendment has been around since the Civil War I don't see how it has become a big deal now. If It never was a big deal before I don't think it should matter now.
ReplyDeleteChallenges that would come if we would alter the 14th amendment is immigration. Immigration is defiantly something we have to worry about because having people that don't really belong here come here and that isn't a very good thing. So, we'll have to get on the lookout for things like this so it doesn't become a bigger deal then it is now. I agree with Michelle Waslin when she says, "This is about politics and emotions, not about real policy. If you deny birthright citizenship, that doesn't do anything to solve our immigration problem." because I also think that even if you deny birthright citizenship, it doesn't help us with our immigration problems that we'll still have on our backs.
I don’t think the United States (US) should allow birthright citizenship because in the article it says that any parent that comes to the US illegally and has a child that the child they have is a US citizen because he or she was born in the US and that doesn’t make a lot of sense because people who have their babies in the US should need to be US citizens also. Are population will increases if we keep letting illegal immigrants into our country and if the population increases than we would start running out of money
ReplyDeleteSome challenges that you might run into would be that some Spanish speaking communities might get mad and protest against the law and out of 4 million kids at least one of their parents is an illegal immigrant. If all of these kids just left our country then people would turn against the government and get really mad. Some people might agree with birth right citizenship because some other countries do it and some people might agree with the system that China and other countries use which is if your parents are citizens then you are a citizen. It would also be challenging because you would need to get about two-thirds of the US senate to approve on it. You might also ruin history and maybe some historians would be upset with that.
In my opinion birthright citizenship not should be allowed for the better of the children. If illegal immigrants come here to take citizenship after their baby, then get deported then their baby becomes a foster child. As an alternative, immigrants could come to America after they have their child and apply for citizenship. This will make the child and parents much happier, as well as giving jobs to people who deserve them. The challenges that come with altering birthright citizenship are angry politicians and "… damaging relations with the Latino community." Although America was founded on illegal immigrants I believe it will become over populated soon.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the United States of America should allow birthright citizenship. The U.S. is a melting pot full of different people and races and should continue to do so. I completely agree with Michelle Waslin of the Immigration Policy Center in Washington, D.C. when she states, "If you deny birthright citizenship, that doesn't do anything to solve our immigration problem."
ReplyDeleteThe challenges that would come with trying to alter birthright citizenship would be to get it ratified from a bunch of different houses. Just as the article stated, "...requires approval by two thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives and then ratification by 38 state legislatures." I think it would be considered too much of a hassle to get it through all of that voting. Then to have too much illegal immigrants would make a even bigger problem. I believe that they should let the birthright citizenship stay the same.
In my opinion, I agree with the U.S letting birthright citizenship. I agree because the children are born in the U.S and they need their parents to raise them. People shouldn't get yelled at for wanting there kids to have a better life. I think that if they change the 14th Amendment of the Constitution then many problems will happen. Our country would think differently about changing other Amendments if they change one. Also if they change the 14th Amendment then many Latino families may get broken up.On the other hand, I think that the illegal immigration in our country is becoming chaos. With the more and more illegal immigrants there are more people without jobs. In our state for example we have a huge jobs crisis, so the last thing we need is more people without dreams. Just like they said in the article. I think that if they change the 14th Amendment then many problems will start.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the U.S. should not allow birthright citizenship. Letting someone become a U.S. citizen simpily because they were born here is ridiculous and fool hardy. If we keep allowing citizenship from birth, we will see a huge influx in immagration, spiking far ahead from what it was in previous years. While it may be hard to overturn the fourteenth ammendment, the consequences could be devastating if we don't. While the difficulty for eliminating birthright citizenship would be monumental, it would be entirely beneficial to the United States. If we don't fix the problem in the constitution, we will soon have to start making entirely new changes to our form of government to fit with the rising population of immigrants.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree that the US should allow birthright citizenship. If someone is born in the United States, then they are, technically American. If they stopped allowing birth right citizenship, many immigrants would be very upset, though, they shouldn’t be crossing the border illegally, their children should at least be able to live here, and made American if they were born in the United States. Though I more or less agree with this statement,” If you are an illegal immigrant, we clearly have not given you permission to reside here," says Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA, (a group that favors decreased immigration.) "You are still subject to the jurisdiction of your own country." The immigrants cross over the border illegally, and think that if they are here, then their children will automatically be American, though it doesn’t work that way. However, in Mexico, Canada, and most of South America, if you cross over, no matter what, your children will be from whatever country they’re born in. If someone tried to alter, or overrun birthright citizenship, there would be many relieved police men, but also many immigrants would be infuriated with this, since if their child is born in the U.S they should, technically, be American.
ReplyDelete1. I agree that the United States of America should have birthright citizenship, but I also think they should make a law so that if an illegal immigrant has a child in the America they cannot obtain birthright citizenship. I think they should do this because we founded this country on the constitution and the amendments. I also think, though, is that we should have a law saying that the child of an illegal immigrant should not be able to get automatic citizenship.
ReplyDelete2. I believe that some of the challenges that will come up will be trying to get the whole country to switch to the system of getting the babies citizenship and I also think trying to get 2/3s of congress to agree to alter the amendment.
I do not believe the United States should allow birthright citizenship. I think this because it gives illegal immigrants reasons to cross illegally into America. If they have a child here, they think it is okay to stay into the United States. The immigrants will use their children to get them to stay in America. Overturning the 14th Amendment would just cause more chaos and more illegal immigrants. Once a illegal baby is born here, they automatically become illegal immigrants. That would double the size of the illegal immigrants in America. America citizenship should be earned not just given to you.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the United States allowing birthright citizenships. Although that would mean changing the 14th amendment, it’s worth it. First of all, anyone could become a legal citizen if their illegal immigrant parents came across the border right before they gave birth. Since their parents are breaking the law, and the children are legally owned by their parents until they are eighteen, you would think that they would be considered illegal immigrants also. If we do continue to allow birthright citizens, illegal immigrants will become legally allowed in the U.S. even after they broke the law. How are we supposed to know if they will break more laws? Also, if they really wanted to become a citizen, shouldn’t they legally become one? If we do change the 14th amendment, there could be some issues. First off, what would happen to all the illegal immigrant children that are already considered citizens? Will they be allowed to stay or not? Next, it will be difficult getting all of the illegal immigrants out of the United States because each week it seems like more and more are showing up by planes, swimming part of the ocean, or just sneaking across the border. Lastly, we would have to have all congress vote for changing it to be able to alter it. Overall, I do not agree with allowing birthright citizenship in the United States.
ReplyDeleteIllegal immigration is a huge issue in our country but an even bigger issue is birthright citizenship. I believe that if your parents are illegal immigrants and they had you here that you shouldn’t be able to have a citizenship. Some might say that it is not the child’s fault and that they can’t help where they are born, my response to that is, if you are entering our country illegally you should have to be monitored at all times and you should be held accountable for your child. As for the challenges we would face if we did change birthright citizenship, I believe that it would be a pain to alter because two thirds of the house would have to agree with the law being passed to change the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. That is my opinion on birthright citizenship.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the United States should allow birthright citizenship. I feel this way because technically not allowing it would increase the population of illegal immigrants. Let’s say I am pregnant and from Mexico and I want to visit the United States. I just happen to be a couple days early and give birth in the US. Don’t I have the right to make my baby a citizen? Some challenges that would come from trying to alter or overrun the 14th amendment are people voting no to it.
ReplyDeleteI disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. If we allowed the law, it will probably create disorder. For example, Senator Lindsey Graham states, “We can’t just have people swimming across the river having children here-that’s chaos.” Also, if we allow the law, illegal immigration will just continue, leading to problems in the future. If overturning the law, our immigration problem might become settled (the people born from illegal immigrants might understand that they will have to live in the shadows every second of their life because they won’t be American citizens). Besides this, one challenge that would come with trying to overturn the law would be trying to get approval by two thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives and then ratification by thirty-eight state legislatures.
ReplyDeleteWith the illegal immigrant population increasing in our country, I would have to disagree with the birthright citizenship law. "…pregnant women could cross the border from Mexico illegally, and rely on their newborns, who are citizens at birth, to put them immediately on a path to citizenship," is a statement from the article that I strongly agree with. Illegal immigrant families staying in the U.S., because they have an American born child, certainly contribute to the illegal immigrant rate here. If the 14th Amendment was to be altered to overturn the birthright citizenship law, politics and society would have to be confronted. Requirements to change the Constitution include ratification of 38 legislators and two thirds of the Senate or House of Representatives' approval. Also, society could become an obstacle because illegal immigrants with children born in our country would probably become upset with the change. Even though changing the constitution comes with a lot of work, I think it would be worth it to abolish the birthright citizenship law.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree that the U.S should allow birthright citizenship. I think everyone who comes to the U.S should have to become a citizen. People should not just be able to come to the U.S and already just be allowed to be there."...illegal immigrants are not under U.S. jurisdiction, as the Amendment specifies..." I agree with this because it tells how illegal immigrants are not even under the 14th Amendment. Plus, this could harm our country if we were ever attacked by terrorists. Challenges that would come with overturning birthright citizenship would be things like immigration would not decrease in America and immigrants would still come to America. With the immigration deal we already have it would be hard enough to fix it, so instead of overturning it we should just keep the rule we already have.
ReplyDeleteI disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship because pregnant women are hopping the mexico border illegally and they count on their kids to make them legal citizens but, their children must be 21 years old to request legal permission for their parents to be in this country. So for now if they aren't born a legal citizen then they need to stay in their own country.
ReplyDeleteI think some of the challenges that would come with altering or overturning the 14th amendment will be protests and other serious reactions. Also what would happen to those who have already requested citizenship and got it? Will they remain here in the United States or will they be forced to move?
1. Do you agree or disagree that the U.S.A should allow birthright?
ReplyDeleteI agree because there will be less illegal immigration, and the illegal immigration is very bad to the society because the U.S will have lots of citizens. And I think the birthright is really important for less problem and more order.
2. what challenges would come with trying to alter or overturn birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th Amendment?
If the U.S don’t let people born in the U.S some people will not agree with the amendment so I think people need have the liberty to be born in U.S because it’s better if you are born here that to be an illegal immigrant.
1) The birthright citizenship should stay the way it has been since the Civil War in 1868. I agree with Michelle Waslin who stated in the article “if you deny birthright citizenship, it doesn’t do anything to solve our immigration problem”. Immigrants want to come to America because they feel they can have a better life here. Changing the citizenship amendment will not change people’s minds about what America has to offer, freedom and opportunity. People will still want to come here and raise their children here because they want to have a better life.
ReplyDelete2) There are many challenges in trying to overturn birthright citizenship. If we change the law we will actually increase the amount of illegal immigrants in our country. Altering the amendment would also require approval by two-thirds of the Senate and the House of Representatives. To get this approval would be extremely difficult, since most members of congress have strong feelings about changing our contstitution. I believe America is great because it is a melting pot. Our forefathers wanted people to come here. Illegal immigration has gotten out of control but altering an amendment that according to Gary Gerstle has “played a critical role in our nation’s history” is not a wise decision.
I strongly disagree with the idea of birthright citizenship. I think that it is crazy to think that if someone can sneak across the border illegally and have a child, then there child is a legal citizen. This problem is growing in the US and needs to be stopped. I also agree with Graham, a South Carolina republican who said,” We can't just have people swimming across the river having children here—that's chaos"
ReplyDeleteSome of the challenges that might come with trying to overturn this law are that it might weaken our relation ship with legal Latinos in the United States. Another thing that this would cause would be a great illegal immigrant population. Over all thought I think the effects of birth right citizenship will be worse then if we take it away. We need to remove this law.
I disagree that the U.S should allow citizenship birthright. The reason why I disagree with the U.S is that many illegal immigrants have been crossing the border between Mexico and the U.S, and once they make it past the border they give birth to a baby and then they call themselves “Americans.” If illegal babies are being born in the U.S they should still be apart of their countries jurisdiction not the U.S. Also Rosemary Jerks says, “If you are an illegal emigrant, we clearly have not given you permission to reside here,” that is true statement because many illegal emigrants think that they can come into the U.S and not obey its laws; then they don’t deserve to be an American. If the citizen birthright law is overturn we could see a decrease in the illegal emigrant population.
ReplyDelete1. Do you agree or disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship? Why? Be sure to refer to specific points from the article to support your opinion.
ReplyDeleteI disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship for illegal immigrants. "We can't just have people swimming across the river having children here—that's chaos...” This is true because our population is growing with illegal immigrants. The children of these illegal immigrants should not have birthright citizenship. Both their parents should be legal, and if they are not, their children shouldn’t be legal either. “…pregnant women could cross the border from Mexico illegally, and rely on their newborns, who are citizens at birth, to put them immediately on a path to citizenship.”
2. What challenges would come with trying to alter or overturn birthright citizenship as stated in the 14th Amendment?
…changing the law to disallow citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants would actually increase the size of the illegal population, since babies born to anyone here illegally would be illegal from the moment of their birth.” Even though I disagree to allow birthright citizenship, I do believe that changing and trying to alter birthright citizenship would come with many challenges and headaches. Not everyone would agree to change the 14th Amendment because it was created to ensure the citizenship of American-born slaves and their children. "You would be perpetuating a large undocumented population, with all these children growing up very much living in the shadows…”
Some people might agree or disagree with birthright citizenship, which means that if you were born in the United States you are automatically a citizen. In my opinion, I disagree because we are having problems in securing the borders and illegal immigration. I do not believe that is right because pregnant woman are being brought to the United States to have their child born as a citizen.
ReplyDeleteI think overturning birthright citizenship would bring many problems and challenges. I believe that it will not be a simple thing to overturn it because it will bring many problems. Just like Mexico, they have birthright citizenship but it is not simple. I believe that at least one parent must be a citizen to be able to have your child born in the United States.
I do not agree that the U.S. should birthright citizenship. I believe that the people can come here with a passport or become citizens. If the parents really love their kids, then they would register to become citizens, so the kids could be it too. People abuse the fact that they can have their kids here, and have them be citizens when they are not. The article said that pregnant Mexican women are swimming to America illegally, so that their kids, “anchor babies”, are passed as citizens. That’s not fair to the kids because they aren’t raised by their parents. There are many kids in Foster Care because of abandonment, and it’s hard for the kids to grow up. It’s the same thing for the “anchor babies”.
ReplyDeleteIf the government tried to overturn or alter, many people would be furious with the government because it was in the 14th Amendment. People may start a riot or something very bad. I think the government could control it like everything else they have controlled. But, I think if the illegal immigrants want to have access to birth right citizenship, then they should just go to Canada, Brazil, or Mexico! So, that’s my conclusion. Even though people may disagree with me, this is what I believe.
I disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I feel this way because you’re supposed to have to go through a bunch of procedures and wait until you’re 21 to become a legal citizen. For example, Rosemary Jenks of NumbersUSA says "If you are an illegal immigrant, we clearly have not given you permission to reside here. You are still subject to the jurisdiction of your own country." With the way things are now, people just hop over the border to have their kids legally because eventually they will be too. A challenge that would come with trying to alter the 14th Amendment would be that certain people feel really strongly about them and would be angry with the possible changes. As stated in the article, “About 4 million children who are American citizens have at least one parent who is illegal, according to a study last year by the Pew Hispanic Center” and this means that a lot of people would also feel the change is unfair.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the government that we must be born in the America . if we don't then being an american is worth nothing. If any one can run for president. And their would be an over flow in population. thats one of the reason we have border patrol. If this country would be destroyed if any one could run this country.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I believe that anyone should be able to live in The United States if they want to. If a person is an illegal immigrant and they give birth to a child, while in the States, that child should be a citizen. “Opponents of birthright citizenship say it encourages continued illegal immigration.” I strongly disagree that it encourages continued illegal immigration. If the child of an illegal immigrant, is a citizen because of this amendment, the child is no longer illegal.
ReplyDeleteI think that if the 14th amendment was to be altered or overturned, there would be many different challenges that would come. Many citizens would be angry with that decision. It would definitely be harder to become a citizen. Like the article says, “Technically speaking, changing the law to disallow citizenship for the children of illegal immigrants would actually increase the size of the illegal population, since babies born to anyone here illegally would be illegal from the moment of their birth.” So, if the law was changed, a bigger problem would arise. What would happen? Would the children of illegal immigrants be forced to leave?
I do not agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I feel that to be a citizen, you should become one and not be born into it. The article says, “… it's much less common in Europe and Asia, where citizenship more frequently depends on whether a parent is a citizen.” I agree with Europe and Asia, I believe that to get birthright citizenship, your parents must be a citizen. The problem with taking away birthright citizenship is that, it will increase the number of illegal immigrants. Also, to change birthright citizenship the Constitution would need to be changed which is a very doubtful thing to happen.
ReplyDeletePersonally I do not think that illegal imagrants that come over pregnant should have their children become citizens. Because if they have multiple kids here they can't leave them, so they have to stay in the U.S. illegally. The illegal imagrant rate has climbed very high in the U.S. I don't think that its fair to the people that actually take the time to become a citizen. Were pregnant women are crossing over and giving birth making their child a citizen automatically.I think that we should do the same as Europe and Asia, by only allowing the children to become citizens if their parents are. If we banish the amendment we will have many angry people, and possible protesting. Another obsticle would be trying to get all of the authorities to agree that its not fair.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the 14th amendment because ever since it was passed after the civil war it was considered fair and today I still think that this law is fair. One of the reasons that American is so great is our country is so diverse and all of our differences make us better. When our county is diverse we understand more about the world and other counties. If we were to change the law it would “actually increase the size of the illegal population,” not decrease the size of the illegal population. These are the ways Europe and Asia handle their immigration laws.
ReplyDeleteSome of the challenges that might come with trying to alter the birthright citizenship law stated in the 14th Amendment would be deciding who the new law would apply to. For example, would the new law apply to all people born illegally or just some because of their age? How far back would the new law apply? All of this would be challenges to consider if we tried to change the “new” birthright citizenship law.
I disagree, I believe that in order for anyone to become a US citizen they should have to go through right legal steps first. If the US allows birthright citizenship then more and more illegal immigrants will be coming here and having their babies and legally making the US citizens. Lindsay Graham, in a Fox News interview said, "We can't just have people swimming across the river having children here—that's chaos." I think it would be extremely difficult to overturn the 14th amendment because that’s what our founding fathers laid out and it would actually increase the size of illegal immigration because right when they would be born they would automatically become illegal.
ReplyDeleteI think that we should keep the birth right citizen ship because America is made of people from all over the world. We are all immigrants except for the Native American Indians. I am aware of the fact that some people are come here illegally so their children can have American citizenship. In my opinion, the child is an American citizen until he chooses if he wants to be or not. The parents should not have to be an American citizen before their child can be one.
ReplyDeleteI Agree with Lisa V ‘’ Personally, I cannot blame the immigrants for entering the United States illegally. Many people from different countries view the USA as a land of opportunity and a chance to lead a better life.’’ Everyone in the world comes to the U.S for a new life and for there kids to have a great education. I also agree with Christian W he said “I agree that the US should allow birthright citizenship, because we've had this law since the Civil War.” The Civil War made it so anyone can come to the U.S from all over the country and I think it should stay that way.
ReplyDeleteDemetri C. of 4-5 said, "Illegal immigrants that come to America from foreign countries such as Mexico and Canada are not citizens." I definitely agree with this statement because no matter how many illegal immigrants come into our country from other countries shouldn't be considered citizens, and neither should their offspring.
ReplyDeleteKristen A. of 4-5 said, "I think that if the parents of the child are citizens then the child should be too. But if the parents are illegal immigrants then the child should not be a citizen." I agree with this statement because if the parents of the offspring are considered legal citizens, then their offspring should also be considered citizens, but if the parents are considered illegal immigrants, then the child shouldn't be allowed to be citizens.
I believe that the Patrick is wrong in saying “I think that they should allow birthright citizenship, it's just easier.” The reason that the 14th amendment should be revised thoroughly is because it is presenting a problem. The amendment should state that both parents are born in the United States in order to grant full citizenship. The immigrants, if the case were that one parent must be from the United States to grant citizenship, could then slowly bring their entire families over. They just need to have one parent get across and become a citizen. The amendment must be changed as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with Alia’s statement, “I think that we should have birthrights because then if we didn’t then a lot of immigrants will come over and just have children.” If the 14th amendment was not allowed, the immigrants would not try to come to the United States for all the privileges. Without it, they would just be on the run as illegal immigrants their whole lives and never even get to citizenship. The amendment should state that both parents must be US citizens for their child to be granted citizenship. I’m not saying they should get rid of the amendment, they just have to change it greatly.
I disagree with Madison H., who said, “… the U.S should continue with birthright citizenship. The United States began as a country of immigrants and should continue to welcome all people.” Most of the early citizens had to earn their citizenship and I do believe that we should continue to give citizenship to those who take the correct steps of applying and earning it. I do not think that we should give it to a child whose parents came across the border illegally. Some people could purposefully plan this in order to have their child’s citizenship declared.
ReplyDeleteI also disagree with Jordan K. who commented, “…it’s ridiculous to make a mother and father with their newborn child and make them go to a different country to register a child. I believe that if you are born in the United States you should automatically become a United States citizen.” I would understand this if the parents were initially from the United States, but in the case that we were given they are not. If a child was born here and the parents were not citizens how would the baby live here. It’s parents would not be able to stay in the U.S. I do believe that a child and there family should be allowed to become U.S citizens if they go through the same process of applying as everyone else must do. Otherwise it is unfair to those who follow the proper procedures.
I agree with Hannah D because she said, “I disagree with the United States allowing birthright citizenships. Although that would mean changing the 14th amendment, it’s worth it.” It really is worth it because we don’t want illegal immigrants coming over to have their child so they can be a citizen. It is not right and we should change it or else they will just keep coming over like Matt S. said, “If we allow the law, illegal immigration will just continue, leading to problems in the future….” Our country will be full of illegal immigrants and once the children grow up and are 18 they can get their parents over the border into the state. They want to have a better life for their children, I get it, but they still can’t do that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Quinn C. after reading his comment because he brings up a very good point that I have not thought about. He states, "We also need to keep people from coming in over the border and looking for jobs which is increasing our unemployment rate. For America to prosper, we need to act fast on the 14th amendment and illegal immigration." That is something quite important that the USA must think about. When illegal immigrants come over, they must get a job in order to support themselves and their families. The more illegal immigrants in our country, the more jobs that are going to be taken up. Consequently, with all the jobs taken up, the unemployment rate will gradually increase because there are not enough jobs for others. However, this is a problem that can easily be solved. As long as the employer makes sure that the person applying for the job IS a citizen of the US, then it will be fine. Unfortunately, there may be businesses illegally hiring illegal immigrants. Now that I have read the reasons of others for why the US should not allow birthright citizenships, I'm beginning to see why that would be a good idea. Illegal immigrants in our country couldn't possibly do us any good at a time like this, where our economy is in a crisis. They will only take up space and jobs that should be saved for the genuine citizens.
ReplyDeleteI respectfully disagree with Chrisitan W. when he says, "If we get rid of this law, then about 4 million children will become illegal immigrants according to the article, which also says that this law has never been questioned in Congress before, which really concerns me. America is known as a country of many cultures. If we change this law, that will drastically change our population. I don't know about you, but I would rather not lose all of these people who provide jobs and money for this country." Although clearing our nation of illegal immigrants will drastically decrease its population, I do not think that is necessarily a bad thing. For one, there will be much, much more job opportunities in the United States after illegal immigrants leave. Secondly, the illegal immigrants in this country do not do much for our country, as I have previously mentioned. They do not provide jobs or money for the US because illegal immigrants are not permitted to open businesses or work here. After all, they aren't even allowed to be here! They are just another problem to deal with during our time of crisis. I believe-differently than before-that the United States would be much better off without them.
I agree with Grace when she said, "birthright citizenship not should be allowed for the better of the children." I completely agree with this because illegal immigrants that are pregnant come to the United States and have their baby. It would also be really mean for a mother to do that to her child because then the child is a citizen of the U.S., but the mother is not. So, "then get deported then their baby becomes a foster child." As for the problems that might come from altering the Constitution, I liked Taylor’s response from 4-5 when she said, "I believe that it would be a pain to alter because two thirds of the house would have to agree with the law being passed to change the 14th Amendment of the Constitution." I do agree that it would be difficult, and that they would have to have most of the people from the house to agree with the law being passed. Although I believe this, personally I think it would be worth the trouble of altering the Constitution not to allow illegal immigrants to have birthright citizenship.
ReplyDeleteThe 14th Amendment and birthright citizenship are hot topics today especially with the increase in immigration discussion in Arizona.
ReplyDelete“In my opinion everyone should have to become a citizen, and not be allowed to automatically be a citizen of the United States because of birthright citizenship.”- Montana H. 4-5
I agree with Montana because it is not fair for the people that are going through the proper channels to become citizens to be cheated out of citizenship by an illegal immigrant who claims birthright citizenship. People should have to go through the proper immigration process to be allowed citizenship in this country, just like the immigrants before them. While I oppose birthright citizenship, it is a heated topic because changing the Amendment would affect our relationship with the Latin American community.
“Many people from different countries view the USA as a land of opportunity and a chance to lead a better life. Most illegal immigrants only wish for a better life. So many Americans take for granted that they were born Americans; born to the privileges and rights of being a free American.” – Lisa V. 7-8
While Lisa makes some very good points, I have to disagree. It’s not fair for them to cheat the system and the rules that we as citizens follow every day. While they may have harsh daily lives, they should work hard as we do as their freedoms.
Okay, now I have to comment on some others that caught my attention.
ReplyDeleteOne that caught my attention was by Megan L. " I think we should allow birthright citizenship because if they don't allow it, there will be twice as many illegal immigrants and twice as many complaints." I totally agree. If America is next to Mexico, and people want to cross over, them we can deport, not to be mean, but those who are born here because of them, they would be illegal immigrants to without the law. If we changed it, it would drastically lower our population.
The second post that caught my attention was by Maddie C. " Personally, I don't think that illegal immigrants that come over pregnant should have their children be citizens." I see where you're coming from, but I completely disagree with you. Without these kinds of citizens, the people would be deported. Their parents came over here pregnant, not just for them to be citizens to sometimes. Some people may want their children to be born here for a better future for THEM, so I think we should allow birthright citizenship.
In is comment Liam states” I think we should keep the birth right citizenship because America is made of people from all over the world.” I agree with Liam on some levels because I think America is built on illegal immigrants too. On the other hand I think America has had its growing time, and now its economy is falling so the legal citizens needs its jobs rite now to stay afloat.
ReplyDeleteIn Montanans comment she also agrees with discarding birth right citizenship as well.
She states"...everybody should have to become a citizen..." although most immigrants prefer to be lazy and illegal, it is possible to become a citizen.
I agree with Hanna F. when she says "Our country would think differently about changing other Amendments if they changed one." I think this is true because the people of the U.S. will think it's okay to start changing the Amendments and start taking advantage of this decision. She also mentions that people shouldn't criticize the parents for wanting their kids to have a better life.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Nate H. when he states " Letting someone become a U.S. citizen simply because they were born here is ridiculous and fool hardy" The reason I disagree is because, the were born in the U.S. so they should be citizens, this would be like saying, " I was born in Mexico, but i'm an American citizen. " It doesn't make much sense to me. Also, if we change the 14th amendment to prevent birthright citizenship, it will increase the population of the illegals. The mothers of the children are not going to go back to where they came from just because they had a child. If we didn't have immigrants we wouldn't have America.
I agree completely with Demetri C. (4-5), birthright citizenship should not be allowed. He said, and I quote, “ We should adopt China’s law, witch says that one parent needs to be a legal citizen for the baby to be a citizen.”
ReplyDeleteI can’t express how much I disagree with 7-8 Jenna F. She states, “…the educational programs are better here and everybody has a right to learn.” Everybody may have a right to learn, but not in our country. If you won’t benefit our country we won’t allow you in, it’s as simple as that. The law should be overturned.
I agree with Mathew S. who said “I believe that in order for anyone to become a U.S. citizen they should have to go through the right legal steps first.” I agree with Mathew because I think that making you go through the right legal steps to become a U.S. citizen is the right thing for the U.S. to do. I don’t agree with Meghan L. who said “I think that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship because if they don’t allow it, there will be twice as many illegal immigrants and twice as many complaints. I disagree with Meghan because I completely disagree with the birthright citizenship law. I also disagree because eventually people will get over it and stop complaining and the number of illegal immigrants crossing into U.S. soil will lower.
ReplyDeleteI think Maddie C. brought up a good point when she said "If we banish the amendment we will have many angry people, and possible protesting." I believe this to be true. If we banish the 14th amendment, then we could have an issue in our hands. Coming back to last week's blog, we already have enough to deal with. I don't think a mob of illegal immigrants will help our country. It's kind of difficult for the president because he has to look both ways. If he keeps the 14th amendment, he will have to deal with illegal problems. If he bans the 14th amendment, then he could have a mob of angry illegal immigrants to deal with.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Collin F. saying "I agree with the government that we must be born in America. If we don't then being an American is worth nothing." Collin F. brought a strong topic to my mind. Our forefathers of this country risked and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. They fought for many years to make this country what it is today. I do not blame immigrants for wanting to come to America because compared to other countries, America is great! What bothers me is people wanting to immigrate illegally. They are disrespecting our forefathers, our country, and all we stand for. America isn't something to take for granted. It is a country full of passion, spirit, and most importantly, freedom.
Although I see what Hannah D is saying but I have to disagree with her on… “Changing the 14th amendment.” I don’t agree with her because “Since their parents are breaking the law, and the children are legally owned by their parents until they are eighteen.” I do understand the problem with that yet it would not be far for the children of the illegal aliens. Here’s why, the child of the mother that crossed the border illegal deserves a good start in life that the reason people do it.
ReplyDeleteFinally I agree with Hannah on couple things such as, “What would happen to all the illegal immigrant children that are already considered citizens? Will they be allowed to stay or not?” We both have similar questions but at the same time different answers. Hannah said “we would have to have all congress vote for changing it to be able to alter it.” On the other hand I said “All of this would be challenges to consider if we tried to change the “new” birthright citizenship law,” but I don’t think we should it would just cause too many problems.
I completely agree with Hannah F though, to start we both agree that “people shouldn't get yelled at for wanting their kids to have a better life.” I agree with this because that is was makes America so great it’s a new start for people. Another thing that we both agree “With the more and more illegal immigrants there are more people without jobs. In our state for example we have a huge jobs crisis, so the last thing we need is more people without dreams.” All were saying is that we “think that if they change the 14th Amendment then many problems will start.”
I agree with Magen L with the comeent "I think the U.S should allow birthright citizenship because if they don't allow it, there will be twice as much illegal immigrants and twice as much complaints"
ReplyDeleteI agree with Quinn C. who disagrees with the birthright citizenship law. Quinn says, “I think that the immigration law should be past in order for the U.S. to not become overpopulated.” I agree with this statement because overpopulation can lead to problems in the future. Also, I agree with Adam M. when he talks about the challenges in overturning the law because he states that “you would need to get about two-thirds of the U.S. senate to approve on it.” In addition, I agree with Matthew L. when he says that trying to overturn this law might “weaken our relationship with legal Latinos in the United States.”
ReplyDeleteI agree with Montana when she stated, “I do not think that the U.S should allow birthright citizenship. In my opinion, everybody should have to become a citizen, and not be allowed to automatically be a citizen of the U.S because of birthright citizenship.” People can’t just say, “Oh, I think I’m going to illegally cross into United States, have a baby, and now my baby is a citizen.” That’s just not right! I also agree with Brooke. She declared, “With the illegal immigrant population increasing in our country, I would have to disagree with the birthright citizenship law... Illegal immigrant families staying in the U.S., because they have an American born child, certainly contribute to the illegal immigrant rate here.” I most definitely agree with that statement. You can’t live here without citizenship even if your child is a citizen. That’s why the government should overturn the 14th Amendment. I don’t think just anyone can live in the United States, you can once you become a citizen. I strongly disagree with Morgan R. when she claimed, “I believe that anyone should be able to live in The United States if they want to. If a person is an illegal immigrant and they give birth to a child, while in the States, that child should be a citizen.” I can’t stress enough how that could end up being a big mess. Who knows the possibility of what could happen with the “anchor babies.” That is my proposal to you and the government.
ReplyDeleteOut of the fifty-five comments posted, many of them had great ideas. Quinn C. of period 4-5 spoke out and said, “I believe that the 14th amendment should not be allowed. The amendment is possible causing illegal immigrants to travel to the US and have an American baby.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this statement completely. There is no reason someone has the right to sneak into the country, have and have a legal baby.
Also, Patrick B. of 7-8 commented, “I think that they should allow birthright citizenship. It's just easier (if only slightly) however they should alter the 14th amendment by saying that (at least) one parent has to be here legally…”
That was another very intelligent idea because then two people cannot sneak into a country, have a baby, and be legal parents. It is just not fair for the American citizens, who came here legally.
Taylor W. said, “I believe that if you parents are illegal immigrants and they had you here that you shouldn’t be able to have a citizenship.” I agree with Taylor. I think that if their parents are illegal immigrants, and they are under the supervision of their parents, they shouldn’t be able to be a citizen. Ashtyn H. commented, “I think some of the challenges that would come with altering or overturning the 14th amendment will be protests…” Asthyn and I have the same thoughts. If only 60% of the governemnt want to change the amendment, how are to other people going to react? They aren’t just going to sit around; they are going to protest and try to change the minds of those who do want to change the ammendment. Shane R. stated, “We should not change the U.S. just because of a minor immigrant problem.” That is the point though. It isn’t a minor problem anymore; it is turning into a big problem. We don’t know if the immigrants really came to the United States to be a citizen or because they wanted to cause damage.
ReplyDeleteI do think that America should continue allowing birthright citizenship. I strongly agree with Hannah F. 4-5 when she commented, "I agree because the children are born in the U.S and they need their parents to raise them. People shouldn't get yelled at for wanting their kids to have a better life". I also believe that if the children are born in the U.S. and then automatically become illegal, the children would not have as good a life as they could in America.
ReplyDeleteHowever, while I see 4-5 Raphael U.'s point, I strongly disagree. "If the citizen birthright law is overturn we could see a decrease in the illegal emigrant population". I do not think that the illegal immigrant population would go down, I believe it would rocket up. If all immigrant children were illegal, than not only would there be illegal parents, but also illegal children. As a result, the population of illegal immigrants more than doubles.
Like Danielle S. said, "I do not agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship." I agree with her statement because the government does not need a bunch of immigrants coming to the United States with out going through the process of a citizen."Like the article said, there will be more and more illegal immigrants coming over if we keep the birthright citizenship allowed." said Kristin A. This statement was from the article and I agree with Kristin because, like I said about the first statement, we can't have immigrants coming and leaving with kids in situations like that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eric because “If we were to change the law it would “actually increase the size of the illegal population,' not decrease the size of the illegal population.'" we would certainly have more illegal immigrants’ coming into the USA and hiding from the police so they won’t go to jail. Soon there will be too many immigrants’ and then they will over rule the police and there won’t be enough space for all of the immigrants’. Therefore I agree with Eric.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Bradley to because “people that come here legally have to wait and do all kind of things to become a citizen, but other people are just coming over illegally and have kids making the child, and eventually them, citizens.” Among us that sometimes we know and sometimes we don’t know that they are crossing the border illegally and hiding within the busy cities. Therefore I agree with Bradley.
I do not agree with Jordyn K. when she says, “I believe that the U.S should allow birthright citizenship…” I think that illegal immigrants are coming to the United States and then they just have children so they will have birthright citizenship. They are taking advantage of the 14th Amendment and what it has to offer. “With the illegal immigrant population increasing in our country, I would have to disagree with the birthright citizenship law,” said 4-5 Brooke A. I am in complete favor with Brooke. I also think that the population of illegal immigrants is growing outrageously and this issue needs to be stopped. We cannot have illegal immigrants coming into our country and depending on birthright citizenship to keep them in the United States illegally. This problem has to be solved.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rachel M. “About 4 million children who are American citizens have at least one parent who is illegal, according to a study last year by the Pew Hispanic Center". If this is just the amount of illegal aliens with kids, then thats alot on its own. Just think theres already 4 million parents in the U.S. illeagally, then how many are over here with out kids?
ReplyDeleteRachel M. said she “disagreed that the U.S should not allow birth right citizenship”. I completely agree. Hopping over the border to have your children be your key into become legal is wrong. We shouldn’t have to use our children for our needs. People who want to become legal citizens in the U.S should do it the right way an register.
ReplyDeleteAlso Megan W. said “if we overturn birthright citizenship many people would be affected”. This I agree with. What would happen to the people who are already declared legal? Would the just be kicked out? I do not believe we should be punished for the mistakes of others, it just not fair.
I completely agree with Jenna F. when she says, “I agree because people come to America for freedom and better opportunities”. I agree because this country is supposed to be the land of opportunity and freedom. She also says that by changing the 14th Amendment, illegal immigrants would still come to the United States for better lives. Someone else said that by changing the 14th Amendment, people would feel more comfortable changing not only other Amendments, but the constitution as well.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Danielle S., because I also feel that to be a citizen , you should become one and not be born in it, because I feel that anyone could be a American.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Morgn H, because I believe that anyone should be able to live in the United States. If a person is an illegal immigrant, and give birth to a child while in the United States, I agree that the child shouls still be a citizen.
I agree, that the U.S should still be letting immigrants children be America, if they are born in the U.S, they should ,technically, be American. Like what Liam O. said,” I think that we should keep the birth right citizen ship because America is made of people from all over the world.” Plus, most people in the United States are immigrants, such as their parents, or grandparents, though, they’re not illegal. I also agree with what Liam O. also wrote, “I am aware of the fact that some people are come here illegally so their children can have American citizenship. In my opinion, the child is an American citizen until he chooses if he wants to be or not. The parents should not have to be an American citizen before their child can be one.” Though, I completely disagree with what 7/8 Danielle S. wrote,” I do not agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I feel that to be a citizen, you should become one and not be born into it.” As I said before, if you are born in the United States, you should officially be American.
ReplyDeleteMorgan 7-8 said "I believe that anyone should be able to live in The United States if they want to" which I completely agree with. If someone comes to the country and has a baby that is born here they should be allowed to stay. If they change the amendment to fix this illegal immigrant problem then I think there would be more problems in the long run. Aeron Y 4-5 said, "If the parents really love their kids, then they would register to become citizens, so the kids could be it too."I agree with Aeron, parents should have to register their kids here just like everyone else if they want to be legal. But I also disagree, I think that some people don't have enough money in this worlds economy to buy a passport and travel here.
ReplyDeleteThere were a few ideas from classmates that stood out to me. I agree first of all With 7-8 Austin R.'s Statement "'We can't just have people swimming across the river having children here—that's chaos.' Being born without any parental help, guidance, or nurture in a new world by themselves at such a young age is worse than being born in a bad place." We aren't the only victims of illegal immigration, so are the children that illegal immigrants leave alone here in America when they go or are taken back to their own countries. Furthermore,I think 4-5 Brooke A. had a valid point. "Illegal immigrant families staying in the U.S., because they have an American born child, certainly contribute to the illegal immigrant rate here."More immigrants in America increases the chnace that others will come, causing a very messy chain reaction.
ReplyDeleteMany people have different views of birth right citizenship. One example of not wanting a birth right citizenship is from Matthew S. who said," If the US allows birthright citizenship then more and more illegal immigrants will be coming here and having their babies and legally making the US citizens." He, for example, views birth right citizenship as horrible for the population of the United States. Although Liam O. says," America is made of people from all over the world. We are all immigrants except for the Native American Indians." Liam, however, views birth right citizenship as a good to make it fair for immigrants to come since most of America is filled with immigrants.
ReplyDelete"If illegal immigrants come here to take citizenship after their baby, then get deported then their baby becomes a foster child." I agree with Grace on this statement because we already have a big problem with foster children I don't think we need any more. "I believe it will become over populated soon." I also agree with Grace on this because the people that come into the United States need jobs and there is a very short supply of them due to our economy today, so if they don't have a job and earn money how will they support their family?
ReplyDeleteFrancis P. said “I disagree because we are having problems in securing the borders and illegal immigration. I do not believe that is right because pregnant woman are being brought to the United States to have their child born as a citizen” I agree with his statement because if we did just have every women from Mexico or Canada come to the US illegally then our population we grow significantly and if we secured our borders we would have a smaller population, What that means is that our economy might get a little bit better and our schools wouldn’t lose as much money.
ReplyDelete“I think that they should allow birthright citizenship. It's just easier (if only slightly) however they should alter the 14th amendment by saying that (at least) one parent has to be here legally or if they don't know who the parent is for birthright citizen for I disagree that it will not be a deterrent, however I think that it would be wrong to have a child with only one parent.” Said Patrick B. I agree that it would be easier, but I don’t think that it is the right thing to do. Because sometimes what’s easiest isn’t always the right thing to do and if you did the easiest way and it wasn’t the best way to do things then many people would probably be very unhappy with the government.
"If the parents really love their kids, then they would register to become citizens, so the kids could be it too." I agree with Aeron because if I were a parent I would do what's best for my children and not do what's illegal. Additionally adults are supposed to be role models and show us kids the right things to do in life not the wrong things to do.
ReplyDeleteFor the first question I agreed with Austin R. (7-8). In his comment he says,"I don't think that the United States should allow birthright citizen ship because mothers are just coming to the U.S. and giving birth leaving their children". This would mean that the border patrol would have to let these people into our country because they have a kid who is classified as a U.S. citizen, it is ridiculous. For the second issue I agreed with Patrick B. (7-8) as he says,"However it will probably be hard to actually convince any politician in congress of my idea to reform the 14th amendment than they have to persuade both the & Judicial branches rest of the Legislative of government. it may not seem like a major thing to do but that's a little over 2/3 of Washington's (nonvoter) politicians". I think that it will take alot to overturn this law, but I do believe this is something that needs to be fixed once and for all.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Rachel M. when she said, "I disagree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I feel this way because you’re supposed to have to go through a bunch of procedures and wait until you’re 21 to become a legal citizen," because sometimes the parents that hop over the border just want the best for their soon to be child, or children. They might want their kids to be known as American citizens, to have a better life for their kids.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, i agree with Morgan H. when she stated, "I agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I believe that anyone should be able to live in The United States if they want to," because I think everyone should have a chance at a great life like most of us do. American should be welcoming, and let them to our beautiful country.
I disagree with Christian W. 7/8 who commented “I agree that the US should allow birthright citizenship, because we’ve had this law since the Civil War. We shouldn’t follow a law made 145 years ago. We cannot follow a law made so long ago. It was made long ago for a difference reason, to insure slaves got freedom. So how can we apply this old law to modern day America?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Meagan W. (7-8) who said “when our four fathers created the 14th amendment they could not anticipate what was to come. I believe that this amendment cannot be applied in modern day America
Montana says, “I do not think that the U.S should allow birthright citizenship. In my opinion, everybody should have to become a citizen, and not be allowed to automatically be a citizen of the U.S because of birthright citizenship,” I agree with this statement because I believe you should become a citizen as well, and not be born into it. Also, when she says, “Some challenges that would come with trying to overturn birthright citizenship is that they would have to alter the Constitution, which probably will never happen,” I agree with her, because changing the Constitution would be a lot of work and probably not the main priority, therefore it would never be done. Chandler states, “Challenges that would come with overturning birthright citizenship would be things like immigration would not decrease in America and immigrants would still come to America,” I agree with her because if we do not allow people to be born into citizenship, that will increase the amount of illegal immigrants. However, I still don’t think we should allow birthright citizenship in our country.
ReplyDeleteSavannah D. says "The birthright citizenship should stay the way it has been since the Civil War in 1868. I agree with Michelle Waslin who stated in the article 'if you deny birthright citizenship, it doesn't do anything to solve our immigration problem'. Immigrants want to come to America because they feel they can have a better life here," I disagree with her on this. I do realize that the immigrants come here for a better life but, there's no reason why they can't become an actual citizen first. For example, Danielle S. says "I do not agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I feel that to be a citizen, you should become one and not be born into it," and I completely agree with her.
ReplyDeleteThe 14th Amendment has resulting in many opinions due to the illegal immigration rate rising in the past years. One statement that I strongly agree with about the topic is from Max L. who stated, “…The 14th Amendment should be dropped because it would only increase the outcome of illegal immigrants…” Max has similar ideas to my opinion, like the thoughts of birthright citizenship leading to more illegal immigration. “…the US should allow birthright citizenship, because we've had this law since the Civil War, and it has not been questioned since.” stated by Christian W. is a statement that I would have to disagree with. Due to birthright citizenship, the U.S. has acquired more illegal immigrants. Also, even though this law hasn’t been questioned since the Civil War until now, new changes and needs in the law should always be welcome if it could emphasize the safety in our country.
ReplyDeleteI personally agree with the birthright citizen law. People that are trying to get to the United States illegaly to create a healthy life, or to give birth to their children, is perfectly fine in my opinion. These are immigrants that want a better life for their children and themselves, I mean who doesnt? They obviously dont have enough money to get a passport, so thats their only choice. These people arent going to harm us, all they are doing is caring for their families and their lives, after all this is a free country and thats what most immigrants come here for; to have better opportunities and much better lifestyle. In the article, Patricia Smith says, "Opponents of birthright citizenship say it encourages continued illegal immigration." I agree with her observation, but if you were to be in the immigrants' shoes, you would of done the same thing, i bet. Some challenges that we would have to face if United States does decide to overturn birthright citizenship, are the U.S will lose the good relationship with the Latin side of the world and maybe other parts of the world as well. Many people in Mexico are very poor and don't have money to get a passport, so the only way they can cross to the United States is by doing it illegaly. This will make many Latins in Mexico very mad and eventually they will turn against us, and i dont think the U.S wants that. Another challenge we might face is if other people in the world are facng the same deal, but do happen to have a passport, they wont want to come to the United States. I dont know about you, but I dont think I would want to have my children, or myslef, to wait until they are 21 just to become a citizen. I would just diss the U.S and get back to my orginal life.
ReplyDeleteThe 14th amendment is a big issue in our country. I disagree with Shane R. on this topic. Shane has stated, “We should not change the U.S just because of a minor immigration problem.” Shane has under estimated how big of a deal the 14th amendment is; pregnant women, who cross the border and give, should not automatically give the child the right to be an American citizen. If the parents of the child are illegal emigrants then the child should also be an illegal immigrant a go with its parents from where they came from. But I agree with Quinn C. from his statement, “The U.S is trying to keep the immigrants out but if they had children here, then the police can’t do that.” Many immigrants think that if they have a child born in the U.S then they can get a free citizenship and live the way they want.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Collin.F.because being born in what we all call the U.S.!!!why does it make a differinc if people dont illegally live in a the us.
ReplyDeleteLiam O. I disagree, being an Amercican is and honor. So if people can cross the border and give birth automatically making their child a citizen, isn't fair. " America is made of people from all over the world", I agree that we are made of many different nationalities. However people now are manipulating the birthright amendment to by-pass the regular procedures.
ReplyDelete7/8 Danielle S said, "I do not agree that the U.S. should allow birthright citizenship. I feel that to be a citizen, you should become one and not be born into it." I tottaly agree with statement because America will not be the same if we allow birthright citizenship. 7-8 Morgan H said, "If a person is an illegal immigrant and they give birth to a child, while in the States, that child should be a citizen. “Opponents of birthright citizenship say it encourages continued illegal immigration.” I completley disagree with this statement because more and more mothers will be swimming across rivers just to have their babies be born into US citizenship.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Matt S. when he says, "I believe that in order for anyone to become a US citizen they should have to go through right legal steps first". I think this is entirely true and if this amendment does not get over turned I think it wil cause problems for our nation for years to come.
ReplyDeleteI also disagree with Michelle K. when she says,"I agree because there will be less illegal immigration, and the illegal immigration is very bad to the society because the U.S will have lots of citizens". I think they will have lots of citizens if they allow birth right citizenship and the only way to stop this is by over turning the 14th amendment.
In the article, "Who Gets to Be an American?" there were many mixed decisions and opinions about weather birthright citizenship should be aloud in the United States. This week's topic has been very interesting. I agree with Alex B. of period 4/5 when he stated, “I believe that they should get rid of the birthright citizenship law.” I agree with this because I too believe that birthright citizenship is wrong and that it is causing problems with our borders. I also agree with another student Chandler D. of period 4/5 when she had stated, “I think everyone who comes to the U.S should have to become a citizen.” I also believe and agree with this statement because that is only fair way. I do not think it is fair for the mother to come to the United States and have a baby born as a citizen.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Meagan L. that we should have to be born in america(or if military in another country),but if we open the country to every one their no control would have no jobs.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Leam O. that the parent shouldn't have to be american cause if they want their child to have a better life than their country than the should have them born here.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Liam O. he is (in my opinion) thinking somewhat fallaciously. An example of this is "I think that we should keep the birth right citizen ship because America is made of people from all over the world. We are all immigrants..." the reason why this is fallacious reasoning is because that it would drastically affect all immigrants however it would only affect those who are undocumented.
ReplyDeleteHowever I think that Aeron Y's blog is correct on so many levels of comprehension it includes many of my very thoughts and feelings. The only thing I disagree with is that she wants to abolish the amendment instead of alter, update, and upgrade it to current needs. I guess it's just where you draw the line.
