Founding Fathers: Proud or Disappointed? (Assigned 11/15/10)

Take a moment to reflect on our recent exploration of both the Declaration of Independence and the events of the American Revolution. In your opinion, are we as a nation today still representing the ideals of our founding fathers as stated in the Declaration of Independence? Why or why not?  Please be sure to explain your opinion thoroughly with thoughtful supporting details.

  1. I believe that today in 2010, more than 234 years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, the ideals are still in effect. Every right listed in the Declaration of Independence that was given to the people is still in effect. In the document, it says that people are born free, and we have "certain unalienable rights" that we keep now, and forever. The founding fathers also said that there was going to be a new, democratic government of the new United States; a government without such tyranny that the King of England had over the colonies. A land where there is freedom, and the right to live a life. And that's where we are today in the year of 2010.

  2. I think we have gotten away from some of the ideas of the Founding Fathers. "Tea Party" voters are against high taxes. Today I saw on the news that the TSA people are doing very rude searches on people at the airport. The Constitution says there should be no searches without warrants--but there are no warrants for these airport searches. Are these searches reasonable for safety? And should the government be able to search without getting a warrant?

  3. I can honestly say that if our Founding Fathers were to take a good look at the United States of America today, they would be both proud and horrified. Proud in the aspect of the superiority of the country that they had once created. Proud because from a simple thirteen colonies, it has since expanded to a satisfying fifty states. Proud because this country is the strongest leader in the world, a place of which so many look up to. Nevertheless, they would be horrified. Though the United States of America is still known as the land of the free and home of the brave, the values of which our nation was founded on is slowing slipping away. Remember the majestic beauty of the way our Founding Fathers spoke of freedom of speech? Well, where has it gone? Did you know that on June 18, 2010, in Dearborn, Michigan, two Christians peacefully passing out copies of the gospel of John on a PUBLIC sidewalk outside a public Arab festival were arrested within three minutes by eight policemen? There are many other cases like this in America today, where people cannot even express their beliefs in public without facing consequences from authorities. What has happened to freedom of speech in America? In addition to that, did you know that the United State’s national debt is now rapidly approaching the fourteen TRILLION mark? Yup. In George Washington’s Farewell Address, he stressed the importance of paying off any national debt as quickly as possible and the importance of avoiding any unnecessary borrowing of money. As of right now, we are standing in $13,735,957,307,887.89 worth of debt. How’s that for taking George Washington’s advice?

  4. I feel that our nation is still representing the ideas from the Founding Fathers represented in the Declaration of Independence. To this day, the people of the United States of America have freedom. People can say or do what they want, as long as it isn’t breaking the laws which were based off of the Constitution. All the branches of government are all equally powered so no person can have too much power. The Bill of Rights is still used today, except we have had we have added many more amendments. I think the Founding Fathers would be proud of America of how the government has been flexible to provide for every class of people equally and keep citizen’s rights.

  5. I believe that we are still representing the ideals of our founding fathers, as stated in th Declaration of Independence, because: we have a president instead of a king and we are still a country represented by the people. We are still free and independent states, we have the power to wage war, conclude peace, contact alliances, and establish commerce.

  6. Yes, I believe that the United States is still representing the ideas of the Declaration of Independence. The US is still a democratic government and not a monarchy like what the founding fathers wanted. We still have a three branch federal system that has not failed us yet. The states still have their own governemts and have a say in Congress. The president has not changed the government so that he has more power. Judges in the Supreme Court have not gotten out of hand. Checks and balances established by our founding fathers are keeping our government from going out of hand. The focus on other countries and the war on terror are the only problems with our government. Once these problems are resolved, I believe that the US will prosper.

  7. I think that we are still representing the ideals of the founding fathers that are stated in the Declaration of Independence. We still believe in the unalienable acts of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We also believe that all men are created equal. Most of all we are a free nation.

  8. I think we are representing what our founding fathers did because we don't have slavery, legal, for one. Everyone is equal, today. We all have rights, when were born, unless we commit a serious crime. The United States does not make people less than another person. We also have a strong government, when it comes to an army. We have the United States Army that is one of the large nations, when it comes to an army. Overall, the founding fathers set the United States up like it is now.

  9. I say that yes, we are still showing ideas from the Declaration of Independence today as a nation. All people in this country still believe they have the right to "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." Also, the fact that people have certain, unalienable rights. These are key factors in modern life today. People know the fact that cruel and unusual punishment is illegal. Since the Declaration of Independence helped shape the first foundation for our government, and the fact that we still keep those ideas is also a way you can see ideas from the declaration are still representing us. Unfortunately, that's all I can say for this blog, so until next time, this is your classmate, Christian W.

  10. I fell America is still up holding the views of the founding fathers. We’re free of oppression and free to pick our own futures and make our own decisions. Although I do think we’re slipping into socialism

  11. I think that we as a nation are doing so far what are founding fathers wanted us a nation to do! We have went to battle so many times and fought so may people that we have the right to be free and independent! As stated in the Declaration we have should be able to have life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness. We should not have to do what everybody else does we can do what we think is right and wrong not what people tell us. As our found father would be very greatly happy with what we have accomplished!!

  12. In my opinion, we are no longer representing the ideals of our founding fathers. The founding fathers intended us to be protected from the government, but now the government has a lot more control over us than before. We now don't have a small government or the same freedoms that come with a small government. It seems like now that we have a bigger government, we have less freedom. There are also laws now that go against the rights stated in the Declaration of Independence. Also, our government will do anything to pass the laws that they favor instead of letting the people decide. There has also been a lot of taxing without people knowing why they are being taxed, just like "taxation without representation".The ideas from the founding fathers about government expressed in the Declaration of Independence, I think, are not the same anymore.

  13. I think our nation is still representing the ideas of the founding fathers, I think this because we still have the rights we did when the founding fathers proposed them. We still follow the guidelines of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Nothing has changed in those documents and nothing has changed in our rules and ways of government. The present government has the same government as the constitutional government. Three branches, powerful central government, and the people can believe what they want, agree or disagree with the governmental decisions. Not only do they have the right to believe that, but they can also do something about it.

  14. I am proud of our nation today. I think that we have stuck by the ideals of our founding fathers. We have stayed together as a nation ever since their time and I believe that we should be very proud of that. We have held onto our independence for many years. Some of the ideals from our founding fathers we have changed. We have stayed strong with most of what the Declaration of Independence stated. We have then grown into a stronger country in my opinion. Overall, I think that our nation that still represents some ideals from our founding fathers, while we have changed others to make our country both stronger and have more freedom.

  15. Today, we still represent some of the ideas stated by our founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence. First of all, we are still an independent country. We make our own laws and have our own government. We have representation for each state, city, and our country as a whole. In the declaration, it explained how we wanted to be free as a country and have our own government. Most Americans still agree with those ideas today. Also, it stated that all men have unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This is still the same today, but not only for men, for women too. Although the United States isn’t using all of the ideas in the Declaration we are still based on it.

  16. I do believe that we as a nation have followed the example set by our founding fathers and the declaration of independence. All men and women are created equal, and women have the right to vote. I believe that are founding fathers set a good example for us to follow and we would be fools not to follow it. They taught us what was right from wrong and how to treat others. We are still taxed today and at a very high rate, and I do however believe that it is a little overpriced. The Declaration of Independence declared our break from Britain and because of that we are free people. We still have young men and women who go to war for us and sacrifice their lives, but they do it to save the thousands of lives back home, and the thing is...they do it on their own will, knowing that they might not return home to their friends and families, but that is how they show us the true meaning of freedom. We did the right thing and we have remained a healthy nation.

  17. In my opinion I think we are represented by the Decleration of Independence because all citizens rights are treated equal. For instance everyone has the right to vote no matter what except for age. Once you turn 18 you are expected to vote. I also think that we live by the Decleration because our government is determend by the people and not by a king.

  18. When the founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence, they were hoping to preserve their freedoms for not only themselves, but for other citizens to come. What they didn’t know was that 200 years later we would still be referring back to the documents they wrote. I believe that if our founding fathers looked in on us today, they would see that we still uphold their ideals for freedom. There has been more involvement from people in the voting process which means that they are still voicing their opinions and they still have the right to. We declared our independence from tyrants and unfair laws, and we have continued to make sure that we are not letting our central government become too powerful for the people.

  19. To be honest, I do believe we try to represent the ideals of our founding fathers. When we try something we can try, but that doesn't always mean we will succeed. Our nation today tries to show life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but those words put into other people's minds may seem different to what we think. The point is, the nation does try to show the ideals of our founding fathers.

  20. I don't believe that we still repersent the ideals and beliefs of our founding fathers. I believe that as the american economy expanded, power slowly slipped away from the people, and landed right into the hands of wealthy corporations.

"What could have caused such a thing to happen?", you may ask, "How could the united states of america, a country founded ideals of; freedom, liberty, equality and justice?" What if I were to tell you that it was caused by the founding fathers themselves?

Let's admit it, we all grew up with a dream becoming rich and having enought money to do whatever we want, because money is power, right? Well that's what many of us think... and right there is the problem, deep in the psyche of the american populace; you see with the idea that money is power imbedded in our minds, we mae it so.

Because of this we simply let the rich take our power. and this in itself contradicts our contries basic values; the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Now last, but not least, we all must ask where this type of thinking came from. To find the answer to this question we must rewind back to the minds of our founding fathers.

We all know that included in the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, there is the right to financial success. freedom of trade; this is called capitalism. Now it's obvvious that this is a freedom, but it also contradicts the basic american rights of freedom; because, with unlimited potential of financial growth it is innevtiable that eventually one person, or a group of people, will gain enough money to overpower the average populace; therefore robbing us of the righs to freedom and equality.

  21. I feel that we have sustained some aspects of government that our founding fathers created. We still have both The Declaration of Independence and The Bill of Rights. People around the country practice the rights expressed in both of these documents daily. For example, people often protest, displacing their right to freedom of speech.
However, other aspects of our initial government have changed over the years. For instance, official documents such as the ones above were once geared only in the area of white men, and now women of all ethnicities have the same rights.

  22. My opinion on the government is that no, it is not the same now then back then. Yes we have the bill of rights, tea parties, and taxes like they did back then but I feel like it’s getting worse then it was then. The founding fathers made the Declaration of Independents for a reason for freedom and our government right now Is now taking away some of those freedoms. The house of represents and the president is trying to make things better but there actually making it worse. That is why I believe that the government is Political pooh and that we need to start doing something now.

  23. I think that we are more or less, still representing the ideas of our founding fathers. In the Declaration of Independence, it says that all men are created equal, yet there are still hundreds of people who think they are better than the minority class, for example, if one American, is much richer or powerful than another, then they are not technically “equal”. Though, we still have our unalienable rights, Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. We are still the United States, and we still have the rights to be free and independent states. Though the Declaration’s rights are still in use, they are not as direct as they were when they first put into motion. Also, if our government - metaphorically- “crashes and burns”, we can change it, to how we want it to be.

  24. I feel that our founding fathers would be disappointed in us. Some of the statements in the Declaration of Independence were far from being followed word by word. I have a feeling that some of the people living in this country do not even know what the Declaration is, which is very sad. In my opinion, if we followed the Declaration completely, we wouldn't be in this economic crisis. The Declaration was written for a reason. This reason was to ensure the rights of our people. I wish that some of our founding fathers could come back to life and observe the state our country is in today. Maybe our problems could be fixed. Until scientists invent some machine that would enable us to do that, we have to solve our problems ourselves. I think the Declaration should be reread to the country over televisions, radios, etc.. That event would be like reliving the moment the Declaration was read aloud over two hundred years ago. Our forefathers did not work long and hard coming up with this document for nothing. If the Declaration helped to keep our country together for so long, I think it will be able to patch up the holes we tore if we just let our country remember it again.

  25. I believe our country still is based on the Declaration of Independence. I mean that all people have unalienable rights it seems like to me and not just men everyone. There is no slavery in this country. Also our president doesn't seem like he is passing unfair laws or interfering with national government. And our country is still maintaining freedom from other countries which we should be very thankfull for. The Declaration of Independence has and still does inspires people with its message of freedom and equality. I believe our founding fathers would be proud.

  26. In my opinion, America today as a nation represents the ideas of the founding fathers wonderfully. I think this because every man is free for himself and the government is democratic. I also think we are not living up to the declaration, but exceeding because women and men are equal and there are no slaves. The declaration states all men are equal but it excludes colored people and women but now it expected that women and other races are treated equally. I think the founding fathers would be proud of America today.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think we are close to what they wanted out of our country, but not quite there. We don't have people that are quite as concerned with government and how it was run like they were. However will still do have people that do. On the defensive area, we are doing better then the soilders did in the American Revolution.

  28. I think that we are for the most part representing the ideas in the Declaration of Independence. We still follow laws and try to keep living by the same guidelines. Some of the ideas of what the Declaration of Independence stood for have changed over time because our ideas and country have changed. The Declaration says, “ all men are created equal…..” and we still follow that today. There are no slaves, and no one group of people are better than others. At the time the Declaration does not talk about women having the same rights as men. The writers did not want another reason to have the states not pass it. Women now have the same rights as men and everybody is created equal as the Declaration states.

  29. As a nation today I think we do represent the founding fathers because they were the ones who made the Declaration of Independence possible. Without their signings we wouldn’t have it and we wouldn’t be a free country. The key seven founding fathers were, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay, James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton. Some of them were also Framers of the Federal Convention. They helped on adopting the United States Constitution in 1787. The Declaration is what lets us have our rights that we have now. Or in other words, our Freedom. We want freedom, without it we would all be under control and wouldn’t be able to choose what we want to do as a country. All states would be the same and we wouldn’t get to have as many rights as we do now.

  30. The founding fathers were an extremely brave, important and risk taking group of men, whom obviously wanted a better life for those who lived in America. These people were so important to our American History, that their ideals are still being represented today. First off, the founding fathers were basically the people who made our country and the way our life styles are today. Without the founding fathers, we would of still be in a horrible situation with the government and people's rights and freedom. Today, the founding fathers' ideals are used for pasings laws or the way we control our government, all because of what the Declaration of Indepence states. If the president or the congress decides to make a law, but this law does not agree with the Declaration, that law cannot be passed. Another way the founding fathers' ideals are still represented present day is that all people, in the U.S, have their own rights and freedom and no one can take it away from them, not even the president. In the Declaration of Independence, freedom and men's rights are an extremely big part of this piece of writing, therefore, the rights of Americans stay with them and leave them no matter what. I believe that the founding fathers are a very respected and well known group of brave men, that everyone should be greatfull for.

  31. I think that our nation today is still represented by the ideals of our founding fathers. The American Revolution helped lead to our freedom from Britain. Our founding fathers declared the United States of America free from Britain. Because of the Declaration of Independence, we are not under British rule and we are a free country. Citizens of the United States of America have the right to have their own voice in government and vote. All American citizens have their own rights that cannot be taken away from them, or unalienable rights. Also, all men are created equal- they cannot be discriminated because of their race, religion, gender, etc. I strongly agree that the Declaration of Independence and the events of the American Revolution still represent our nation today.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe that our current government still represents the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution. For example, when the people make a law, the president vetoes it, but at least 2/3 of the congress agrees with the law, the president can say that that law would be non-constitutional. This shows two things. This shows that the government still follows the constitution and that the president does not have the power to take away people’s rights.

  33. In my opinion, I agree and disagree. I agree because I think that we are following what our founding fathers stated in the Declaration of Independence, but we have changed things throughout it. By changing things I mean we have added more amendments to the Bill of Rights.I agree because we have also stuck with what has been stated in the Declaration of Independence by following each law and amendment. Our central government is the same as how it has and is supposed to be since our founding fathers made it this way. In result, I believe that we are following and representing the ideals as stated by our founding fathers in the Declaration of Independence.

  34. Yes we the people still have the right to vote, we are free, and can choose our leaders. I think that our founding fathers would be proud of this country. We have a strong government, military, and the people of this country.

  35. I think that as a nation today we are still representing the ideals of our founding fathers as stated in the Declaration of Independence because we still take inspiration from the document and abide by what it states. While we did create some new ideas from the influence of the Declaration, we did not alter it in any way. We abolished slavery, whereas the founding fathers were still on the fence whether or not to even mention slavery in the Declaration. We also gave women the right to vote. We added on some items that would help mold a ever changing nation, but the basic foundations, such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Enlightenment, Great Awakening, Mayflower Compact, and even the English documents, the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights, have worked their way into history and continue to set the expectations and rights of Americans.

  36. Today as a nation, I think we are still representing the ideals of our founding fathers stated in the Declaration of Independence because if we weren't then we still wouldn't be a free country. For example, we represent these ideals by speaking freely in what we believe in or having the right to disagree with something. Things stated in the Declaration like how things were unfair with Britain also show how Americans had stood up for what was wrong and eventually got their independence. This is also how our nation works today.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Our Founding Fathers of this country spent immense amounts of time towards making our country independent by writing the Declaration of Independence and taking many bold actions. In writing the Declaration, they expressed some main ideas: equality, rights, and liberty. Today, I truly believe that we have carried out their ideals in many ways. Firstly, we show equality in that now, all people are given the same respect and same chances in live. For example, women are very prominent in government today, expressing that men and women are exactly equal. Next, rights are preserved as we have laws to protect them and law enforcers to make sure that they stay intact. Also, we have a very organized judicial system to require justice to be served when laws are broken. Lastly, showing one of the most important ideals, we have liberty because we are the epitome of an independent country. We have kept consistent our independence when Britain thought that we couldn’t run under our own control after the Revolutionary War. With our Founding Father’s hard work, we have been able to create one of the most prominent countries in the world.

  38. I believe that as a nation today we are still representing the ideals of our founding fathers as said in the Declaration of Independence. First of all, we are living by the statement that “all men are created equal.” People today have rights including rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Also, today there aren’t really unfair laws like back then how the king taxed the colonists. (The government isn’t passing unfair laws.) In addition, today people have freedom of religion, which was stated in the Declaration.

  39. I see the Declaration as a road map, or a guide on how we should protect, server, and govern the nation. Whenever we the people feel there should be a change in power the Declaration allows this with the elections. I believe that “we as a nation today still are representing the ideals of our founding fathers as stated in the Declaration of Independence.” I think this because we still have the same rights and ideas as we did before. This is how the Declaration still is representing the ideals of our Founding Fathers and us right now.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Yes, I do believe that today we, as a nation, still repeat the ideas of our founding fathers that were stated in the Declaration of Independence. For example, it states that we are obligated to three unalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This still applies today. In the beginning of the second paragraph it claims that "all men are created equal". This is a very strong belief even today; since there is no longer slavery and etc. Plus, we have come a long way since then and now we have the government systems they wished for and more.

  41. Today's nation still does represent the ideals of our founding fathers stated in the Declaration of Independence. We still have many ideas as the founding fathers had back then. We still believe in freedom of speech and that all men are created equal. Today many people still uphold the ideals of the founding fathers. Our founding fathers wanted us to build a new country based on freedom of speech and in democracy, they wanted us to do better than they had.

  42. I live life and knowing that I have freedom, and I am grateful for that. I do believe our nation represents the ideals of our founding fathers. I do think we can use improvement where our people remember what our country has been through to get to where we are today. The signers of the Declaration of Independence had their lives on the line. The people of the past went through many hardships for our independence. We should be thankful and not take for granted what we have today. And as for today, we have the freedom of speech, religion, and many more. I believe the United States of America still keeps alive the rights we should have. And, that’s why I think everyone wants to come here for their freedom. I think if our founding fathers could see our modern-day life, they would be proud and believe all the trouble they went through to get here was worth it.

  43. In my opinion, I really don't think that we're the kind of people that we were when our founding fathers were still alive. I mean we lost most of the population of our costal animals because of the oil spill in Mexico, we're bringing illegal drugs to the U.S, and we even had to put a boarder between these to countries because of the threats Mexico has put before our nation. Plus, family members are being killed in Iraq because of religion. Terroists are trying to get to the U.S.A this very second to torture us and murder us because we reffuse to be one of them or be apart of their religion. I'm not trying to say that that's our fault. Our founding fathers wanted us to do better than this. The wanted us to soar into the sky and create peace in the world. But now we are still facing the threat of our people being killed. We, as a nation, know better than to do this. We know that our founding fathers would be dissapionted with a as a country. It's just like saying that we just should of lost the Revolutionary War to King George. We can do better than this. Lets make our founding fathers blessed that we are the nation that's unstoppable.
